First Discussion Topic
For the first discussion, I choose to focus on clinical information systems. CIS are
computer records of the patient’s medical history, test and lab results, and any reports
related to the patient. The goal of the system is to reduce costs, increase workflow
efficiency and help standardize the process (Islam, Poly, & Li, 2018). These goals help the
daily operations of the hospital, but they can also be beneficial to the patients. By
providing all the patient’s information in real-time, medical staff can make the best
healthcare decisions for the patient. The system would also provide alerts and warning
about patients' risks to further reduce the chance of a medical error. Medical facilities see
a CIS as a necessary part to compete with other medical facilities and provide the best
patient care.
Second Discussion Topic
There is likely to be some resistance to the adoption of new technology in a
healthcare setting. If stakeholders feel that a system is working, they won’t want to make
changes that could negatively affect them. This usually causes the adoption of new
technology to be slow, as the majority of the stakeholders need to buy into the new
technology. This, however, is not always the case when the safety of patients or
stakeholders is at risk. The Covid-19 pandemic caused a rapid adoption of social
distancing technology such as telemedicine (Liu & Miguel-Cruz, 2022). I believe this
shows that safety is the most important factor in the adoption and diffusion of technology.
