Currently working in a busy Emergency Room that has been
overtaken by construction has placed a huge burden on the manner in
which myself and other healthcare providers have been able to
practice in the field. After reviewing the article provided to us this
week I think that the most importance best practice is number 3 "
Understand the infection control/ risk assessment requirements and
ensure they are met" ( Ricky n.d.). This practice allows for the
contractor to meet with facility management to discuss the
construction work, implications, noise levels, and necessary
precautions to assure construction crew and healthcare staff/ patient
safety ( Ricky, n.d.). This is one of the most important implications
because it assists to prevent injury or infection to construction
workers and staff. throughout the job it is important for this meeting
to continue happening to discuss the progress that is being made or
new setbacks/problems that have been encountered. For example, if
the contractor finds asbestos while completing his construction, he
must inform the unit management and take necessary precautions to
prevent negative effects on others in the facility. Construction on
functioning healthcare departments may often be annoying or
interfere with care, however it improves the equipment used to care
for these patients and if done correctly, improves the patient care.
