Concept and Etiology:Gastritisisaninflammationofthestomach

lining.Itaffectsthegastrointestinalsystembecauseitaffectsthe

entirestomach.Itdeviatesfromthedefinitionofhealthbecausethe

bodyisnotfreefromillnesswhichisadefinitionofhealth.

Classification: Gastritiscanbeclassifiedasacuteandchronic.Acute

gastritisisaninflammationorswellingofthestomachliningthat

happenssuddenly.Itcanbeanywherefrommildtoasevere

ulcerationwithhemorrhage.Inmostcasesitusuallyresolvesitself

within3daysorso.Themostcommoncauseisspicyfood,NSAIDS,

orotheringestingirritants.Withchronicgastritis,thestomach

becomesinflamedaswell,butitoccursoveralongperiodoftimeas

itgraduallywearsawayatthestomachlining.Thiscanbefroma

timeperiodofmonthstoyears.H.pyloribacteriaisthemost

commoncauseofchronicgastritis.

Signs & Symptoms: Signsandsymptomsofgastritisareindigestion,

abdomencramping(upper),nauseaandvomiting,heartburn,

epigastricpain,blackstoolsandlossofappetite.

Diagnostic Test: Testthatcanbeperformedtoseeifgastritisisa

probablediagnosisareperformingahistoryandphysical,GItrachX-

ray,stoolanalysistocheckforstomachbleeding,completeblood

count(CBC)tocheckforanemiaandH.pyloriantibodiesandbreath

test.
