Cultural diversity within the Gateway Healthcare Systems needs improvement and awareness
among its staff. Each of the three hospitals have a degree of diversity, with Hickman at the
lowest level, St. Luke in the middle and St. Catherine being at the higher end of the three. To
better improve the cultural diversity within the organization, newly hired staff will be
required to attend cultural diversity training within the first two weeks of employment.
Creating a culturally diverse workplace can help with communication, self confidence and
allows employees to thrive.
• First part of training will consist of what is Cultural Diversity is.
o Awareness and Sensitivity.
• Second part will focus on scenarios, tailored to healthcare.
o Videos, written examples, PowerPoint presentations.
• Third part will consist of group activities.
o This will allow staff to discuss and to better understand different viewpoints.
• The last part will be reflection.
o Staff can reflect on their strengths and weaknesses.
o Feedback to the presenter will be given in an anonymous written form, so
improvements on the training can be made.
Having staff that are diverse and understanding of diversity will improve the quality and
efficiency of the health information department. Though a cultural diversity training just at
orientation should not be an once training and done. Having workshops within learning
management system (LMS) throughout the year, on different topics such as age, gender, and
race, can help employees with awareness. With the training, staff will be able to
communicate better with their coworkers and the patients. After the training Hickman
hospital may notice with the new mosque, there has been an increase of Muslims patients.
They can develop a relationship with this community and find ways on how to improve
patient care and recruitment for staffing.
