In order for any health care system to be culturally competent they must
acknowledge the importance of culture. Cross-cultural relations,
acknowledges the potential impact of cultural differences,, increases
cultural knowledge, and adjusts services to meet cultural unique needs are
some importance of knowing about culture. In order to best address the
cultural diversity issues at Gateway Healthcare System, there should be an
implementation of cultural diversity education. This plan should involve
training of cultural diversity due to the standards of TJC on leadership
b Cultural competence training helps improves providers’ knowledge,
understanding and skills for treating patients culturally, linguistically, a
sociology-economically diverse backgrounds states the University of
Wisconsin. This school is a major school of Medicine and Public Health.
b The Cultural Diversity Education Plan should go as follows. All three
hospitals in the Gateway Healthcare System need to have the same training
and standards in place for cultural diversity. This will help make the
organization come together more. b There will be cultural diversity training
that will be required by all employees. New employees that start on with the
organization will have 30 days to complete the cultural diversity training.
They will not be scheduled after the 30 days until they get the training done.
b When for my education plan there will be several topics discussed. These
are demographics, psycho-graphic factors, communication, potential
barriers, and conflict resolution. When reviewing conflict resolution is
important to educate strategies and have an open door policy to help with
problems and resolving them. Another thing was potential barriers. The
University of Wisconsin states to explore and educate the potential barriers
to care between cultures. Another thing is communication. During the
training intercultural communication skills. Psycho-graphic factors include
personality, values, interests and lifestyles. Overall, it is important to
understand the differences and similarities. Demographics is where one
would educate about the similarities as well as differences . Some examples
of these characteristics are gender, age, ethnicity, disability, and
employment status and location.
b During training each topic will be discussed in the form of lecture. After
the lecture I would assign groups and group work. This allows for
discussion on these topics. Role playing is a good way to build perspectives
of cultural, social, and political issues. Smekens Education Solutions b states
the role playing may bring one of best examples to people that every person
is flawed.
b After the role playing assignment is completed the whole staff would join
back together and share what they have learned. In this discussion they will
also take turns on how one another thinks things can be improved. Diversity
can improve quality and efficiency in a lot of ways to department. One way
is through the new ideas and experiences. People are more likely to learn
from each other causing quality to improve. Problem solving is also
increased by the different ideas and perspectives. This can improve
efficiency by not a lot of time spent on problems. There will also more open
dialogue which helps with both quality and efficiency. Some ways to
achieve cultural diversity in a workplace is by leveraging diverse job
boards, reward diverse referrals, provide targeted internships and
scholarships, and highlight diversity on the career page of the website.
