ICD-11 seems to have many updates that will benefit healthcare providers around the world.
According to an article, who’s new International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) comes
into effect, by Christian Lindmeier, the ICD-11 is more user friendly by having multilingual
capabilities (with a translation center built in), completely digital, and has up-to-date codes
and terminology to increase functionality and help reduce errors. Other qualities of ICD-11
would be the addition of updates and improvements that were implemented based on
recommendations from approximately 90 countries. The new database has updated
interoperability which allows for broader trending of health statistics and advancements in
medicine or processes (Lindmeier, 2022).
Another article, ICD-11 2022 release, by Alison Brunier, also written by a WHO
communications officer, indicates ICD-11 has 17,000 unique codes and a smart coding
algorithm that can identify 1.6 million terms. There are also multiple tools that assist with
coding, mapping, and trending. The database even has offline capabilities (Brunier, 2022).
Overall, implementing ICD-11 would be a smart investment for any healthcare organization
looking to enhance the quality of patient care, documentation practices, interoperability, and
reporting capabilities. Plus, the bonus of built-in reference guides, training platforms, and
other helpful tools make the database user-friendly.
I have never had any experience with ICD 9, so I can't speak for that, but ICD 10 is fairly
specific. I like that you have right/left fracture codes. I like the unspecified and not elsewhere
classified. The things I have issues on are probably stuff in the chart that I am missing
documentation for such as if someone got stabbed if it's a laceration or open wound or
puncture wound because when I tried to look that up today, it was a struggle. I think if they
make it all digital that will help find the terms in the index faster. I also think that will help
companies that are sending people home to work. It is going to be faster for them to get the
product and they do not need to wait on a physical copy.

Terminologies and Standards, WHO. I think this was a good point because it also said that it
helped figure out unsafe workflow in the hospital. Sometimes we do need electronic sources to
help us do stuff. I like anything that can get more specific.
I believe that any country could benefit from using a system that has clarity. ICD 10 already
made it to where there was a specific code and even, as I said before, narrowed it down to
right/left/upper/lower and terms such as those. It also helps the patient understand their
diagnosis better and the insurance company likes to see the exact issue. Another example of a
quote in my article said, "It has been compiled and updated with input from over 90 countries
and unprecedented involvement of health-care providers, enabling evolution from a system
imposed on clinicians into a truly enabling clinical classification and terminology database
that serves a broad range of uses for recording and reporting statistics on health" (WHO). That
means that they took a lot into account when they created this system. They were able to try to
narrow down terminology and create something everyone understood.
Side note, I forgot to add they are adding some mental and addiction disorders. I like that they
are trying to keep up to date on those as they are always changing and expanding and because
a new condition is frustrating to try to code for if you do not have a special code.

now come into effect. There are around 17,000 unique codes for injuries, diseases, and cause
of death. More that 1.6 million clinical situations can be coded in this new Classification
System. The ICD-11 is now entirely digital with multi-lingual capabilities reducing the chance
for errors. The new updated ICD-11 also improves the clarity of terms for the general public
and the coding of important details. It also includes updated diagnostic recommendations for
mental health conditions. These updates also reflect recent programs in medicine and is more
capable of capturing data on healthcare safety.
There are also new chapters that have been added to the section of addictive disorders such as
sexual health, traditional medicine, and gaming disorders. The qualities of the new ICD 11
Coding System that would be beneficial to a country looking to adopt it might include sharing
information across the world by providing a common language. It also would identify health
trends and statistics worldwide. Standardizing data is also being used in responding to the
COVID-19 pandemic. This is crucial for tracking progress toward universal health coverage
and would benefit all countries.
ICD-11 recently went into effect and is currently being used by 35 countries. The
improvements in ICD-11 reflect the advancements made in science and medicine since the
release of ICD-10, which has become technologically and scientifically outdated. Some of the
more generic improvements in this area would be things like the important details for cancer
registries now being fully integrated within ICD-11, and coding traffic accidents made easier
by being more consistent with international practices for documentation and analysis. Aside
from updating the medical functionality of the system, ICD-11 has been updated to be more
user-friendly and more in-line with the advancements in digital technology that have been
made since ICD-10 was released two decades ago.
Looking at ICD-11 from a lawmaker perspective, the medical terminology and improvements
might be lost on them. However, there are some major benefits that this coding system brings
that even non-medical workers could understand. ICD-11 has improved the ease of use for
coding which will require less training for healthcare workers, and it also includes
multilingual support with built-in user guidance for coding. This means that money will be
saved on training, and faster accurate coding means higher productivity levels.
The accuracy and ease of coding and less training for its users, it also has a new API and
digital health system. With the introduction of new diagnoses, the refinement of diagnostic
criteria of existing diagnoses. It is IT friendly and able to support data collection on morbidity
to lowering cost. It updates electronic health applications and information systems. Multiple
topics was improved such as safety healthcare data, and more user friendly.
ICD 11 contains improvements in ease of use, coding categories, more universal coding for
worldwide unification of medical coding. These improvenn6have recently take effect. The
utilization of ICD 10 has been standard for me as I have been in HIM for a few years now. This
new coding will be something that staff will bring to attention of our department and begin
utilizing asap.
My initial thoughts on ICD-11 were from a rational, business standpoint for the healthcare
industry. COVID has affected the business side of healthcare as well as the daily front-line
hospital scene of giving care to patients. c The rate at which patients are being seen in medical
facilities all over the world has spiked exponentially. This requires a more streamlined and
efficient way of coding and billing for medical services. It seems ICD-11 should consider
those needs in the new update. c I was glad to see the following improvements that ICD-11 will
offer:
a common language that can be used globally by medical professionals to share standardized
information.

increase in translatable languages and common languages. This will bring a new level of
uniformity for reporting data.

mental health issues that support recent named diagnoses. Overall, the adoption of ICD-11
would be beneficial to any country and especially to one that does not currently have one in
place so that they may have a sustainable and internationally used classification system.

fracture. Recent progress in medicine and advances in technology are also included in the new
updates. This version was made to simplify the coding and provide users with all the necessary
electronic tooling that will allow providers to record conditions easily and completely. There
are also new chapters added on traditional medicine, sexual health, and gaming disorder.
Specifically, ICD-11 was designed to be used for certification and reporting of caused of
deaths, morbidity coding and reporting, and for clinical documentation. For any country
looking to use ICD-11 there are many different languages available to include French, Arabic,
Chinese, and Spanish. Russian and 20 other languages are in the works. Even the API,
browser, and coding tool are in different languages if need be.
With the revision from ICD-10 to ICD-11 comes much needed enhancements. ICD-11 is
completely electronic. There is an increase of meaningful clinical content. It is available for
online and offline use and has become more user friendly with functionality to improve
accuracy. All rare disease is listed and functionality pre and post intervention can be
monitored. The multi-lingual support and built-in user guide will be beneficial to a country
looking to adopt it. ICD-11 also has cluster coding which allows two or more ICD-11 codes to
be combined in order to describe a clinical concept (AAPC 2021). All of these improvements
allow worldwide inclusivity by breaking down language and clinical terminology barriers.
The improvement that has been made to ICD-11 is that the everything is more organized. ICD-
11 is more reliable compared to that of ICD-10. There are more diagnostic categories, as well
as criteria to search for within ICD-11. The chapters are formatted differently by the way
they're structured together. ICD-11 is more user-friendly making it easier to use and find what
you're looking for.
Some qualities of a country looking to adopt this coding system would be it improving the
quality of patient care. Also, anything that would further improve technology would be
beneficial to a country.

medicine along with the most up-to-date information on prevention of disease and disease
treatment. ICD-11 also provides a platform where users can suggest changes or additions to be
made. There are new core chapters with new supplementary chapters. ICD-11 provides new
clinical precision codes to allow more accurate coding with the ability to record data more in-
depth.
For countries looking to adopt ICD-11, this would be their best opportunity yet. ICD-11
allows for more standardization across the board where data can be collected and understood
cohesively between countries. It will be available for use where it has not been possible to use
before. ICD-11 is free for all countries. ICD-11 would also provide countries with the ability
to be able to count and analyze data to identify their most troublesome health issues. There is a
translation tool that easily provides accurate translations with the addition of local terms.
