ICD-11 seems to have many updates that will benefit healthcare
providers around the world. According to an article, WHO’s new
International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) comes into effect,
by Christian Lindmeier, the ICD-11 is more user friendly by having
multilingual capabilities (with a translation center built in), completely
digital, and has up-to-date codes and terminology to increase
functionality and help reduce errors. Other qualities of ICD-11 would
be the addition of updates and improvements that were
implemented based on recommendations from approximately 90
countries. The new database has updated interoperability which
allows for broader trending of health statistics and advancements in
medicine or processes (Lindmeier, 2022).
Another article, ICD-11 2022 release, by Alison Brunier, also written
by a WHO communications officer, indicates ICD-11 has 17,000
unique codes and a smart coding algorithm that can identify 1.6
million terms. There are also multiple tools that assist with coding,
mapping, and trending. The database even has offline capabilities
(Brunier, 2022). Overall, implementing ICD-11 would be a smart
investment for any healthcare organization looking to enhance the
quality of patient care, documentation practices, interoperability, and
reporting capabilities. Plus, the bonus of built-in reference guides,
training platforms, and other helpful tools make the database user-
friendly.
