Change is a constant in health care. When implementing change, such as
introducing the HIE, it is important to present how the new technology is
vital to helping the organization improve. This can be done by analyzing the
current process, such as how information is sought for after a patient
encounter and finding a way to improve the process of retrieving the
information. By implementing an HIE, the organization could retrieve data
on if the patient had a follow-up with a provider after a hospital visit. The
data can benefit the organization. This is the best way to encourage those
who are resistant by showing the positive impact of the system. Also, having
proper training can ensure the people will be comfortable. It's also important
to show how this will improve efficiency among the staff and improve
patient care.
The stakeholders that should be involved are the Chief Executive Officer
(CEO), Chief Compliance Officer (CCO), Chief Information Officer (CIO),
and the legal team. These individuals are key people in implementing an
HIE; Legal team is needed to review the policies of having an HIE that will
affect the organization, such as ensuring HIPAA is met; The CIO will ensure
that the system is upgraded and can meet the requirements to have an HIE;
the compliance team will work with the legal team to ensure the privacy
exchange of information being used by staff members; The CEO will need all
the information necessary to make the appropriate decision on implementing
an HIE, as well as being able to ask questions that may arise.
