Nature and My Uncle
My uncle was a marine soldier of the United States Navy. He was posted in the
Pacific Ocean. I don't really recall the exact base but his conduct towards the life was what I
am grateful of. He used to share his experiences with me whenever he came home. I used to
be intrigued by his hard work and the attitude of never giving up. He was an experienced
marine meaning he was on the field fighting against enemies as a frontline soldier. From his
childhood only my uncle dreamt of joining the USA army, I heard from my grandfather about
how passionate he was to study about the army, it's process of selection and the hard work of
training. My uncle used to do exercise everyday but he preferred doing yoga too.
Yoga is an Indian set of exercise practices and form of meditation which is becoming
very popular now. My uncle although knew much more about this and he always said it gave
him peace to meditate. Being a marine he spent most of this life in the oceans. His personal
favourite were the storms of which he told me stories about. They were fascinating and
dangerous at the same time. Hearing to those experiences taught me one thing that Nature
was a primordial force which was both beautiful and formidable. Once specific story still
gives me a vivid image of how a mariner's life can be hard and difficult at times. He was
traveling on a routine check and supply of essentials to USA base camp in the Antarctica. He
described the beauty of the journey as "tranquil", yet the chills were severe. Travelling for
days in the deep blue waters of the Southern Ocean. But one day that beautiful ocean
transformed completely.
-"It was too windy from the day before only, by night the ocean was furious”, said my
uncle
Uncle continued to inform that their ship almost lost connections with the base in the
Pacific Ocean so that had no prior knowledge about the strength of the storm. The earlier day
was not windy and the weather was normal and sunny; but it changed drastically.
-“The temperature dropped in the night and our captain warned us!” – exclaimed by
uncle.
Then he accounted how the rainfall was torrential with gusty winds and visibility was
not much. The ship rocked many a times and facilities inside were jumbled up. There was
quite damage to the vents and one anchor was lost to the sea.
-“That was the Nature’s wrath we faced”, my uncle recounted.
From this account I understood how humble my uncle was towards nature. How he
regarded that formidable force. My uncle have made me realise we need to think about the
nature more often than we realise. We need to save the nature around ourselves so that we can
protect our own self. I am thankful to my uncle who made me realise that apart from our
livelihood and entertainment planting a small sapling too works. It was because of my uncle
only I practice regular planting of saplings in my garden area. I feel this small contribution
makes me humble and thankful to nature for providing us with the environment where we
live.
