1. Do you agree or disagree with the author's assertions regarding seasonal employees
and cybersecurity risks in the work place? Why?
Yes, I agree with the author’s assertions regarding the hiring risks of seasonal
employees within the workplace. Research has shown us that most of the security and
cyber threats are internal risks as they come from individuals working within the
organization. Seasonal employees tend to not have the same work ethics as permanent
staff employees, as a result, many of their actions may leave the organization in a
vulnerable state due to theft, security issues/breaches and fraud.
2. What steps can (should) managers take to reduce security risks associated with
hiring seasonal or temporary employees? (Consider whether or not the Secure
Computer User training course would be appropriate for these employees.)
Vital steps that should be taken to mitigate any vulnerabilities that are associated with
hiring temporary/seasonal workers include, but not limited to, ensuring that a thorough
background check is conducted prior to employment, ensure that there is security
awareness training and mandate that it is completed. Security awareness training helps
to reduce the chance of unintentional human error by providing the necessary and
critical training and information on the use of information systems.
Another vital step is to limit access permission. “IT must ensure each employee only has
access to data critical to his or her current role and responsibility. If staff members complain
that these rules are too narrow, they may not be the right fit — seasonal workers should
be focused on the job, not the surroundings” (Bonderud, 2016).
3. How can managers show leadership in the area of cybersecurity defenses and best
practices?
Managers can show leadership in the area of cybersecurity defenses by ensuring that all
mandated training is completed by all employees as required. d Managers can also maintain a
zero tolerance policy when it comes to maintaining IT requirments in the workplace;
completing daily security checks to ensure that all cyber protocols are being followed.
