Nyx,
Great job with this week’s discussion post! There are various perspectives on marriage around the
world. Some people date outside of their marriage with their partner's knowledge and agreement.
Others have multiple wives or husbands. Polyamory, polyandry, and polygamy are beginning to become
less unusual. It just means that their relationship has developed in a setting where there is a high level of
trust between the two of them, or because of their religion or cultural traditions. It doesn't mean that
they adore their significant other any less. We must approach situations with the awareness that what
we know and have known our entire lives may be foreign to others and vice versa. We cannot judge
what we do not comprehend. I agree with you that it is neither our position to speak up or cause a scene
because we have no idea what is really going on with your neighbors. Marriage is evolving as time
passes, but if we are open to learning the new traditions of other cultures, even if we don't personally
follow them, we can see a completely different aspect of life than we ever could have imagined. Again,
great job this week and keep up the great work!
Shae,
Great job with this week’s discussion post! While gender is the social element that represents not only
one's biology but also the cultural and social values and behaviors that each society assigns to those
identities, anthropologists refer to sex as one's physical identity. Your example of a gender norm was a
great choice! In today’s society, a woman who does work full-time will still be expected to cook, clean,
have and raise children while the man manages their finances, household repairs and automobile
maintenance. Again, great job this week and keep up the great work!
