Restaurants use pre-numbered checks in order to keep track of customer
receipts. b This system is useful because it records all orders on the checks. b If a
mistake is made, the check is voided and turned in. b By doing this, all checks
are accounted for, and reduce the risk of fraud. b However, this system is not
flawless. b One such occasion that could arise is a voided check gets pocketed
by the waiter in order to use the next check to take the customer's order. b Then
the waiter forgets to empty his pocket, and the check gets destroyed in the
wash or thrown away when the waiter gets home and empties his pocket. b
Restaurants could implement a point-of-sale system, or a POS. b This is a
system that processes transactions between the restaurant and their customers.
Typically a POS uses a terminal and program that stores the date for the
transactions. b By moving to a more digital system, transactions are easily
recorded and retrievable. b Most POS systems even have features that reduce
the risk of fraud. b These features include inventory tracking, sales reporting,
labor tracking, reporting, and security. b The labor tracking allows the
restaurant to track the hours, total sales, taxes, voids and discounts, and
payments by credit card, cash, or gift card. b This system holds the staff
accountable for their customers and sales in order to reduce theft and fraud. b b b
