Discussion Thread: Emotionally Charged Subject
My dad is a worship pastor and I grew up in a loving Christian home. My mom wanted to protect
us (I realize that now) and would only allow us to watch Christian shows, listen to Christian
music and read Christian materials. My brothers and I only watched cartoons, movies and tv
shows that were centered around learning about the Bible or biblical matters. I could read books
such as Left Behind but wasn’t allow to read Harry Potter which everyone else was reading. I
listened to Christian music which was fine but my whole life was surrounded by it. We went to
public schools so we were introduced to secular things such as movies, books and music. I didn’t
realize I had an issue with it until I was a preteen and I felt like I was missing out on things. It
became a hot top that was discussed ecery single day.
I had a wonderful childhood and teen years. What I remember most is most of my life was
connected to our church. I went there several days a week including Sundays, Wednesdays and
special events on the weekends. Most of my friends were from church as well. I remember being
surrounded by other believers that genuinely cared about me and my family. I had the best youth
group experience and my whole life was centered around that. I have worked at my current
church for almost 6 years and I still crave the community I felt when I was a teenager.
