What is meant by (a) Zero-sum game? (b) Nonzero-sum game? Provide examples in your
discussion.

Kihn (2005) explains that game theory consists of a situational analysis involving
conflicting interests in terms of gains and losses between opposing players. Salvatore (2015)
specifically defines a zero-sum game as a game where one person’s gain is equivalent to
another’s loss, so the total change in wealth is zero. Examples of a zero-sum game include poker
and chess, as there is a clearly defined winner and loser. A non-zero game is defined as, “gains or
losses of one firm that do not come at the expense of or provide equal benefit to the other firm
(Salvatore, 2015).” For example, a hair stylist may provide their services free of charge to a
painter, in return for the painter to provide their services for free. This allows everyone to win or
gain from the situation.
Respond to the charge that immigrants flood the labor market and drive down wages in the
U.S.
Immigrants are enticed to immigrate to another country because of attractive
opportunities such as employment, religious freedom and safety. Usually, the thought of
immigration causes people to think that the U.S. labor market will be affected from the increased
job candidates thus decreasing available jobs and driving down wages. This argument is
unsubstantiated because of facts that research provides. First, Islam and Khan (2015) explains
that historically, immigrants have been paid a substantially lower wage than their counterparts.
Studies have shown that immigrants are paid 20% to 30% less than employee counterparts with
identical skill sets. Also, Hanson (2012) argues that immigration has been closely correlated with
economic growth through broadened cultural aspects, increased skill set and decreased group
think. With these facts, there is no reason to think of immigration as a threat. Christians should
view and approach the situation with respect. As Leviticus 19:33-34 (ESV) states, “When a
stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall threat the stranger

who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were
strangers in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”
