Week 5 – Theology o Worship and Preaching
After reading the selected chapters from Created for Worship, Engaging with God, and watching
the presentations by Dr. Steven Newby, Pastor Robert Morgan, and Professor Don Wyrtzen,
articulate the theological basis for worship and preaching, and describe the role the pastor has as
a primary communicator of worship theology. Make sure to fully document your findings
according to current Turabian style.
Dr. Newby in his presentation The Call to Preach reminds us that any believer in Jesus
Christ who is saved, filled with the Holy Spirit, a new generation, and royal priesthood, is called
to preach.1 As believers, our lifestyle plays an important role in spreading the gospel because that
is the first thing people observe before we even speak. It is primarily through the fruit we bear
that is evident in our lifestyle that we are able to make disciples of men. This brings us to the
subject of why the role of the pastor as a primary communicator of worship theology is
important.
Even though we have all been called to preach (Spread the gospel of Christ) by telling
our testimony of how Christ redeemed us from the law of sin and death, there is always a
primary leader that God places over His church which is the Pastor. One of the core duties of a
pastor is to lead worship services which include several hours of reading and outlining during the
week. A more one-on-one duty of a pastor lies in shepherding his flock. Also, Pastors are
expected to lead by example and to challenge church members to follow biblical principles. The
Bible highlights a number of moral virtues a church leader should possess, including the strength
of character, love, caring, grace, and humility. Finally, Pastors are expected to be knowledgeable
of the Bible and in prayerful communication with God, demonstrating a strong working

knowledge of scripture for worship and counsel. Daily Bible study and strong theological
understanding are vital to the ability of a pastor to lead and teach.
Haven outlined some of the vital roles of a pastor, it is evident that the spiritual formation
of the church relies on the pastor as the content of worship must be theologically rich and able to
nourish the congregation. Also, expository worship and liturgy are one of the ways that unity and
faith can be built up in the heart of the congregation. According to Dr. Newby, this is “the idea of
getting in the Bible and using an inductive approach in extorting and sifting through the text.”2
Drama, music, and dance are also a means by which what is being explained in the scripture can
be taught to the congregation.
The ministry of the Word always leads people to transformed lives and this is the ministry
that a Pastor upholds. There is power in the Word. The Word of God brought this world into
existence, the Word brought Jesus Christ from the grave, and this same Word is able to bring
spiritual health and meaningful change to the universal church of God.
