Trauma Case Study: Military Narrative
Synopsis
The case study is about John, aged 27. John has served in the army for the past eight
years and served an average of three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he attained the rank
of sergeant first class. One day, he arrived early in the office and did a beck depression
inventory where his score of 20 showed that he has mild-to-moderate depression. He also did
the beck anxiety depression, where his score was 15 showing mild-to-moderate anxiety. The
beck hopelessness inventory score was 3 showing minimal hopelessness. The beck scale for
suicide ideation was 0, indicating no suicidal ideation (Case Study, n.d). Finally, the mini-
mental status exam revealed normal cognitive functioning.
John went to the facility because his parents encouraged him to do so for him to talk
about his experience and condition. He was staying with his parents after his honorable
discharge nine months ago in reasonably good health. Previously, John enjoyed hikes and
riding his mountain bike; however, all these are challenging for him to do now because of the
back and leg injuries (Case Study, n.d). During his service in the army, he undertook routine
patrols; however, he was injured on their last patrol. He was also involved in an average of 62
firefights with combatant enemies and enjoyed working with his team in such scenarios.
However, John narrates about 19 situations that have remained permanently glued on him
since he was ambushed and pinned down with his team. This experience triggered fear since
his team members thought that they could lose their lives. When he was deployed in the
Korengal Valley, he was showered with mortar or sniper fire until they could use counter-
snipers to get assistance from an apache helicopter to get mortar crew assistance. The case
