4-MAT REVIEW: FIRST CHOICE ASSIGNMENT 1
Summary
The book I chose to discuss is Dumplin by Julie Murphy (2015). It delves into the
struggles related to body image, self acceptance and defying stereotypes. I want to discuss how
you can overcome trauma and turn your pain into praise. The story revolves around Willowdean
Dickson, a girl who proudly embraces her body despite being labeled as overweight in her Texas
community. To challenge the beauty standards imposed on women Willowdean lovingly referred
to as Dumplin' decides to participate in the beauty pageant as an act of rebellion. This decision
surprises her peers. Shakes up the towns perception of beauty. The narrative takes off with
Willowdeans determination to join the Miss Clover City pageant move that defies expectations
and sparks a transformative journey for both herself and those, around her. As she goes through
the pageant facing judgment and criticism, about her body Willowdean discovers her strength
and forms connections with other contestants, especially Millie. The inclusion of relationships
with her co worker Bo Larson adds layers of complexity to Willowdeans journey. Initially
intended as a protest the beauty pageant transforms into a platform for growth and
empowerment.
The story explores the dynamics of friendship, love and the resilience needed to
challenge expectations. A significant moment in the narrative occurs when Willowdean learns
about Aunt Lucys influence on her mindset. Her memories become a guiding force that
encourages Dumplin' to embrace her uniqueness and defy societal norms. In the resolution
Willowdean emerges not as a beauty pageant participant but as a symbol of empowerment and
self acceptance. The story concludes with a message about the value of being true to oneself and
appreciating diversity. "Dumplin'" is an inspiring story that prompts readers to question norms,
embrace their individuality and celebrate both their own beauty and that of others. Through
Willowdeans journey Julie Murphy presents a tale of self discovery and empowerment that

resonates with readers, across all ages. This book reveals how bullying can affect someone that
can turn into trauma. You begin to create scenarios in your head and eventually turn into
someone that you are not. Bullying is a distinct social stressor because it represents a systematic
form of interpersonal aggression coupled with intense feelings of powerlessness and
defenselessness (Arzt, 2023). Bullying can lead to signs such as anxiety, depression, and even
diminish academic achievement. As I dove into the story of Dumplin I noticed she wanted to
take revenge on those who were bullying her, including her mother. If you read the book this was
not a dangerous revenge, but a revenge to prove she could be a pageant queen, but maybe better.
As she was trying to prove others wrong she began to self-sabotage and lose sight of herself.
Self-sabotage is when we actively or passively take steps to prevent ourselves from reaching our
goals (Jeffs, 2018). As I continue to discuss Dumplin she eventually turns her pain into praise.
Concrete response
During moments of introspection as I immersed myself in the pages of "Dumplin'", a
surge of connection arose within me towards Willowdean, the protagonist. Her journey of self
discovery battling expectations and grappling with body image issues struck a personal chord
that has greatly influenced my own perception of beauty and self value. I've never fit into the
mold of a girl. From an age I found myself inhabiting the space that society labels as "plus size."
While my friends effortlessly explored clothing sizes in digits I navigated a world where double
digits were my reality. The constant reminders of this disparity the hushed comments and not
subtle teasing formed the backdrop to my adolescence. The phrase "People used to tease me
about being big" reverberates in my mind like a refrain, from the past. Undeniably I was
considered attractive. Those compliments came with conditions – an acknowledgment that I was
attractive "for a girl." The weight of those words burdened me heavily; they cast shadows on
every step I took. Every reflection, in the mirror. In an effort to shield myself from gazes and

hurtful remarks I sought solace in clothing. The fabric became my shield, a barrier, between my
body and the scrutinizing eyes of society. I became skilled at concealing not my appearance but
also the vulnerability that comes with being different. I would think of the verse Psalm 139:14
and the phrase that states, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Biblegateway). God told us
that is what we are and yet a never felt that way because I let the words of others define me.
Willowdeans struggles resonate with my insecurities. "I used to feel self conscious about my
weight " she said. Those words could have easily been mine. The battle against self
consciousness is unrelenting a negotiation between who I'm as a person and the unrealistic
beauty standards imposed by our image obsessed society.
Now as an adult the specter of those insecurities still lingers. " to this day I grapple with
being on the side." The struggle doesn't simply disappear; it's a presence that shadows my
reflection. Despite making progress, in accepting myself there are moments when the judgment
of the world feels suffocating and threatens to undo all that growth. Reading Willowdeans story
serves as a reminder that these struggles are not isolated incidents. The narrative acts as a mirror
reflecting not the journey of a character but also resonating with the shared experiences of those
who have felt burdened by societal expectations. The exploration of beauty and value regardless
of size becomes a story that resonates with people, beyond the pages. Amidst the pain there is a
glimmer of hope, a ray of light breaking through the darkness. "I appreciate my boyfriend
because he truly sees me loves me and finds me beautiful." These words hold a meaning. In the
midst of all the noise in society there is an affirming voice reminding us that beauty cannot be
confined to standards. "I hope to one day truly see it for myself." The longing for self acceptance
remains as a journey. As I read "Dumplin' " I find comfort in knowing that Willowdeans tale
though fictional exemplifies the strength of the spirit and shows us that embracing our
uniqueness is possible in a world fixated on conformity. The narrative serves not as a reflection

but as a guide leading us towards self love and acceptance becoming real experiences rather, than
distant dreams. Today I struggle with my weight as it is always fluctuating, but I remember the
words of God, that I am made in his image. God loves me, my boyfriend loves me ,and my
friends and family love me. What is most important is that I love myself through it all. Of course
trauma brings pain, But God gives you peace in those moments.
Reflection
While engrossed in the captivating story of "Dumplin'", thoughts and reflections arose
within me. I felt a connection, with the character, Willowdean which led me to question the
societal norms that uphold unrealistic beauty standards. Willowdeans struggles with her body
image compelled me to ponder the influence of culture, media messages and social expectations
on our perception of beauty particularly when it comes to body size. There was a study that
discussed power of social media and it can have a private or public effect. Media information
about new norms may persuade and individual to accept them (Arias, 2019). I found myself
contemplating ways to promote self love and acceptance in a world that prioritizes appearance.
This made me question the role of education, media representation and community support in
fostering an definition of beauty. I remember growing up the social norm was that you had to
skinny to considered beautiful. As time went on women started hating their bodies and wanted to
change them to feel “socially accepted”. Cultures all over the world put women and girls’ bodies
at the center of intrigue based on connotations attached to beauty such as goodliness and
sexuality (Kaziga, et. al 2021). Society is damaging young women to think they have to change
themselves to be seen or loved.
The positive impact of Willowdeans boyfriend on her journey towards self acceptance
made me reflect on how relationships can navigate judgments. How can individuals support their
partners in embracing their selves when faced with conflicting expectations? Additionally

memories of comments and teasing from my past made me consider the power of language, in
perpetuating body shaming. I wondered about the role language plays in contributing to body
image issues and explored steps we can take to encourage inclusive communication surrounding
body image.
Willowdeans story also got me thinking about how the medias portrayal of body types
can impact our self perception. It made me wonder about the effects of media representation and
how it can be more responsible and inclusive when it comes to showcasing body sizes and
shapes. On a level it made me reflect on how we can challenge and change beauty standards
within our own communities, schools or workplaces. Starting conversations and taking action to
promote an diverse definition of beauty seems like a positive way to bring about change.
Furthermore the journey of self discovery and self love, in "Dumplin'" made me question
how we can cultivate self compassion in the face of pressure. How do individuals those who
struggle with expectations develop kindness and understanding towards themselves? These
questions not resonated with me while reading the book but also inspired me to find ways to
apply the lessons learned from Willowdeans story to my own life. It ignited a commitment,
within me to contribute towards a shift that embraces body positivity and acceptance where
authenticity and diversity are celebrated.
Application
The captivating narrative of "Dumplin'” has deeply touched my imagination. Led me to
reflect on my professional growth in a transformative way. Willowdeans journey towards self
acceptance has made me reconsider how I view body image, societal expectations and the
importance of self love. As I immerse myself in the lessons woven into this novel I feel

compelled to articulate actions and changes that will shape my future. At the core of my
transformation is a commitment to nurturing self love and acceptance. Inspired by Willowdeans
resilience I am determined to embrace my qualities and recognize the beauty within me. This
entails redirecting thoughts about my appearance and embracing the traits that make me
authentically myself. An essential part of this journey involves challenging self talk. Just like
Willowdean faced her struggles with self consciousness I understand the need to actively
cultivate a positive inner dialogue that affirms and uplifts. This shift involves not reframing
perceived flaws in a light but also acknowledging and celebrating personal achievements and
strengths.
Through this process of introspection I have come to realize the impact that body
language has, on our perception of ourselves.
In response I am determined to adopt a confident demeanor. By carrying myself with pride and
embracing my presence my goal is to exude self assurance. This change, in body language isn't
about how others perceive me; it's also about reinforcing my confidence and self worth.
Advocating for inclusivity naturally emerges as an extension of this journey. In both professional
aspects of life I am devoted to challenging beauty standards and promoting a mindset that is
accepting and open minded. This entails participating in discussions that encourage a
representation of different body types and appearances in the media while supporting initiatives
that aim to redefine conventional beauty norms. Inspired by the relationships portrayed in the
novel I am committed to engaging in conversations centered around body positivity with those
around me. By sharing experiences and encouraging others to embrace their individuality my
intention is to contribute towards fostering a compassionate and understanding community.
These conversations will create an environment of support where we celebrate our differences.
4-MAT REVIEW: FIRST CHOICE ASSIGNMENT 7
Drawing inspiration, from Willowdeans boyfriends influence my aspiration is to cultivate
relationship dynamics. This involves not choosing partners who appreciate and support my self
but also actively discussing topics related to body image and self esteem.
Open and honest discussions will serve as the cornerstone of building relationships that prioritize
authenticity and mutual support. Acknowledging the impact of support my aspiration is to be a
source of encouragement, for others as they embark on their paths towards self acceptance.
Whether its through mentoring, coaching or simply being a friend I aim to contribute to the
growth and well being of those around me. To maintain a mindset and navigate challenges with
resilience I intend to incorporate practices into my daily routine. This may involve engaging in
meditation using affirmations or employing techniques that foster self awareness and inner
peace. By grounding myself in the moment my goal is to develop a mindset centered on self
compassion and emotional well being. In summary the story of "Dumplin'" has inspired me to
take actions in both my professional life. These actions revolve around nurturing self love
challenging self talk advocating for inclusivity participating in body conversations cultivating
healthy relationships and supporting others on their own journeys. As I embark on this quest for
embracing authenticity I anticipate an effect of change not only within myself but also, within
the communities I engage with.
