Experience with Theology Essay
When I hear the word theology, what comes to mind is the science behind religion.
Webster’s Dictionary defines theology as “the study of religious faith, practice, and experience
especially: the study of God and of God’s relation to the world.” I feel as though it is a good idea
to learn all of the aspects of religion. There is a verse that I believe goes along with the topic of
theology, James 1:26-27 states “If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue
but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled
before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself
unstained from the world.” (ESV) In Matthew chapter 23, Jesus talks about how it is important
for his disciples to learn how the teachers if religious law and the Pharisees interpret the law of
Moses, however Jesus tells them to not follow their example. I mention this because I feel as
though for us Christians, it is important to know of other religions but to not study them. I
mention this because I feel as though this is what theology is.
As of right now I have never had an experience with of studying theology. However, I do
recall my pastor doing a study on theology, however that was a while ago and I was too young to
truly know what he was talking about. When this study was taking place, I was a lot younger and
didn’t truly understand what theology meant. Now that I am older, I still am quite unsure of what
it truly means, but I do hope to learn it. Colossians 2:8-10 says, “Don’t let anyone capture you
with empty philosophies and high-sound nonsense that come from human thinking and from the
spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. For in Christ lives all the fullness of God
in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over
every ruler and authority.” (NLT) I believe that this verse is relevant to the topic because Christ is
showing us that we need to study the meaning of religion, which is what theology is. Reading

this verse helps me see that I need to understand and know the true meaning of religion. I haven’t
had many experiences with theology in the past, but I do hope to change that.
What I hope to gain and learn from this course, is the true meaning and understanding of
theology, as well as how it can help us Christians become closer with God. I believe that learning
the study of the religion will truly help me become a better Christian as well as have a closer
relationship with God. There are some verses that I am going to remember and keep going back
to throughout these next few weeks. These verses are 2 Timothy 3:14-17, “But you must remain
faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust
those who taught you. You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have
given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. All
Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is
wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses
it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” (NLT) These verse help remind me of
the importance of theology.
