Experience with Theology Essay
When I hear the word theology, I immediately think of the study of religion and God.
However, I do not strictly think about Christianity, the religion that I practice and study daily. I
think about the fact that throughout the history of mankind, there has been a multitude of theistic
religions practiced throughout the world. I also consider that not all theistic religions believe in
the same God or even a singular God, nor do they all have the same meanings or practices.
When studying theology, we should be mindful of these variances and respect all religious
beliefs and practices, not just our own.
Based on my knowledge before taking this course, I know that theology studies the basic
principles of religion as well as how people in different locations practice their religious beliefs.
Just as the local cuisine differs depending on where you travel, the local belief system and
religious practices will differ depending on location. Also, it encourages us to ask ourselves
what we know and believe about our religion, as well as why we believe in it. Overall, I feel that
studying theology allows us to further develop our biblical worldview and work on our
relationship with God.
Regarding my prior experiences with the study of theology, my first exposure to it was
through church. Growing up, my family was not very religious and did not teach me anything
about it. Therefore, my initial interest as a child led to my journey of allowing God into my life.
As a result, my only option was to attend Sunday school at church with my friends and their
families whenever the opportunity arose. While I learned a good bit of Bible songs, lessons
based around the Scripture, and why God is important, that is about as far as I got with learning
about theology at church.

As for my second prior experience with theology, I consider my entire college career thus
far at Liberty University to be a big lesson about it. Every course I have taken has taught me
about how Christianity relates to not only my studies but also my career path and life. With that
being said, the course BIBL 104 had been a big part of my understanding of theology. I
completed the course last spring and learned far more about Christianity and God than I ever
have in the past. Despite not having much experience with studying theology, I am looking
forward to delving into it with the aid of this course.
In the span of the next eight weeks, there are several topics that I hope to learn more
about regarding the Christian faith. First, I hope that this course will help me better understand
the roots of Christianity and how it was created. In addition, I would like to gain a better
understanding of how Christianity spread throughout the world. I have read some of the Bible,
including the story of Adam and Eve, and I know that God created the world, but I have never
learned about where the Christian faith originated or how it expanded.
Furthermore, I want to understand why and how the many religious practices within
Christianity were created. Things like baptism, Sunday church services, and communion are just
a few examples of the Christian norm, and I have always wondered why. Finally, I would like
this course to help bolster my relationship with God. Despite being almost 25 years old, I am
still constantly learning about what it means to be a good Christian and a faithful steward of God.
Overall, I feel that this course is an integral part of defining my relationship with God and
deepening my understanding of Christianity, and I am elated to have this opportunity.
