After reading through the Christian Association for Psychological Study, the
ethical standard I believe will be a guiding principle for how I will work with
the needs in my community is informed consent. According to the ChristianK
Association for Psychological Study (2017), informed consent involves
ongoing explanation and ensuring understanding of the process of working
with someone therapeutically. It is important to me that clients guide theirK
own treatments and have autonomy in participation every step of the way.K
Clients are experts of their own situation and have a lot to teach, and
ensuring their understanding instead of simply complacency offers value to
not only them, but the entire process as it unfolds.K
With relation to a community service approach in helping clients, a lot has
shifted in my mindset and awareness. One facet speciRcally is theK
importance of effectively understanding someone’s personal culture and how
that affects the way service should be rendered, as well as how they receive
and interpret services. Another facet is the importance of collaboration withK
all community agencies and ensuring every entity is on the same page with
the same goals to best beneRt the population in need.
Now that I have a greater understanding, I want to ensure that I am applying
these concepts to my practice moving forward. With my current practice as aK
trauma coach, I have already begun to look to the community for resources
and networking. I have joined the Broome County Chamber of Commerce, aK
network of local businesses offering visibility and connection opportunities. IK
have also reached out to fellow stakeholders in the community with regards
to the type of trauma I work with, such as RISE Domestic Violence Shelter,
Crime Victims Assistance Center, and the YWCA. It has been an excellentK
and welcoming experience, and I have found community entities to be very
receptive.K I plan to move forward with the same momentum and collaborate
as much as possible to offer the best services for my clients.K
Moving forward also, I understand the importance of being conscious of my
own privilege within a community and educating myself and others on this
concept.K The importance of culture, and privileges of certain cultures, should
not be ignored and can be used as a strength instead of ignoring it.K
According to McQueeney (2016), she expresses the importance of not
downplaying differences, and that a difference-conscious analysis of
domestic violence can offer valuable insight into the issue. She advocatesK
for teaching the role of an ally, or “a member of a dominant group in our
society who works to dismantle any form of oppression from which s/he
receives the beneRt” (McQueeney, 2016; p. 7). This can be an important wayK
to advocate for community change and instill passion in those who would
otherwise be bystanders rather than stakeholders
