The Top Five Current Social Networks
According to Walsh, Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok are the
most popular social media platforms as of now. Facebook has 2.9 billion monthly active users
(MAU), YouTube has 2.2 billion MAU, WhatsApp has 2 billion MAU, Instagram also has 2
billion MAU, and TikTok has 1 billion MAU. Being that these are social networks, there will be
pros and cons to each of the platforms.
Starting with Facebook and Instagram, these are both connection-based platforms and
what I mean by that is, they are more of a go to when you need to reach people whether it be
family, friends, or potential clients or customers. On these platforms you post pictures, videos,
and on Facebook even status messages. Facebook and Instagram are two of the main platform’s
businesses use to market, find their target audience, and even niche.= Its most useful from a
business perspective versus users who only use for entertainment. These are also ways people get
their news, however, because these platforms give citizens the right to express their thoughts,
concerns, and feelings, information can be tweaked or change making it unreliable which can be
a negative aspect of it.
In addition to that, YouTube is a search engine, WhatsApp is a mobile app, and TikTok is
mainly an entertainment source. As far as YouTube is concerned, being that there are a lot of
YouTube creators who make a living from the creation and posting a lot of the times videos
aren’t posted to inform viewers like it once was before, today there is a lot of click bait going on
and some videos being posted are just to cause controversy or get views which can too be a
downside. Is it still informative? Absolutely. One just needs to be able to differentiate between
what’s true and false. Brachtenbach conducted a study on breast cancer and his findings showed
that with one point being deducted for each misleading statement or claim. After exclusions, 133

videos in our sample were evaluated. Out of a possible 25.5 points, the true mean was 3.90 with
a standard deviation of 1.38.
Although WhatsApp is big among business owners who use this app to connect directly
with their customers which is extremely beneficial, it has been known for having fake accounts
used to scam. For example, connecting with users about fake job offers.= TikTok, has evolved
tremendously over the years and is sued to not only teach and educate, but it also raises
awareness about numerous things, however it can also and has been proven to drive teens to
suicide and deep depression. All in all, everything in the media will have good and bad
attributes, but it’s our job as people to not let it take a toll on our minds.
