Discussion Thread Assignment: Magazine and Film
1. The magazine industry has drastically changed in recent years. What magazines do you read?
Maybe sports, news or Christian content? Are any of them on the Web or in App form? Why
is the magazine industry optimistic about the effects of new mobile technologies ozn its
relationship with readers?
As a lover of all things fashion and beauty, I absolutely adore the magazines, Vogue and
Allure. I enjoy Vogue so much so that I have their magazine subscription that sends me a
physical copy once a month, as I am a collector of vintage Vogue magazines. I also collect
vintage makeup compacts, some from the late 1800’s.
I view Allure primarily through their website. On there, they offer reviews of new beauty
products as well as advice on how to use them properly. They also send newsletter emails.
Additionally, Allure recently delve into the realm of subscription boxes. This is a major
money pool opportunity for them because they are known for their yearly, “Allure Best of
Beauty” awards. Similar beauty subscription services, such as “Ipsy” and “FabFitFun” have
proven astronomical success. Allure’s beauty subscription box has done the same thus far.
All major magazine platforms appear to be adapting to the way our fast paced-
technologically driven world works. With Allure and Vogue being some of the many
gaining immense popularity on their Instagram, apps, and websites.

2. Pastor, author and filmmaker, TD Jakes stated in his video interview that if Jesus were alive
today, he would be a filmmaker. On what basis does Jakes make this claim? Discuss
whether or not you agree with this thought and why.
In his video interview, TD Jakes said that if Jesus were alive today, he would be a
filmmaker. He says this due to the fact that Jesus told parables. Parables were basically
Jesus’s version of films because they are both a culmination of words that set a storyline.
I agree with him saying this, it makes sense.
3. In recent years, more Christian films have come on the market. Some people have sung
their praises and some have criticized them harshly. In your opinion, have the Christian films
out there been effective in preaching the gospel? If so, how, and if not, why not. Do you
have a favorite? If so, why or why not?
Personally, I feel as though the Christian film industry has taken the rather, “cheesy”
turn. If I am being honest, I cannot stand most Christian films. However, as Johnny Cash
once famously said, "I'm not a Christian artist, I'm an artist who's Christian." While there
are good movies with Christian themes out there, such as Les Misérables, The Blind
Side, The Chronicles of Narnia, and perhaps, The Da Vinci Code, majority of films
directly in the Christian movie genre are very lacking. However, there is a vast
difference between movies with Christian themes and Christian movies. The only
Christian movie I can tolerate, and quite enjoy, is The Prince of Egypt.
Today’s Christian films are propaganda driven with very low budgets. This does not
leave much room for potential success. They are often filtered from the world’s realities,
as if they are children’s movies. More often than not, they have the “good vs. bad”

storyline, someone trying to turn a nonbeliever, etc. They do not do effective jobs at
preaching the gospel.
