Part 1 – Introduction and Context of the Passage
The text Psalm 1:1–6 is rich in emotions, attitude, feelings and interest that each
and every individual experiences in his course of life. The attributes of a righteous
individual have been captured in the text. The Lord or Jesus is most righteous who tries
to do the right thing inspite of facing numerous hurdles that come across his way
1
. The
fundamental objective of the paper is to highlight the fact that blessings are bestowed on
righteous beings
2
.
In life, people come across various kinds of situations. But they have only two
ways to respond to them. The first way is to adopt the right path and the other option is
to select the wicked path. The text states that the journey of the righteous people could be
quite challenging in nature but they are ultimately blessed by the almighty. Similarly, the
ones that choose the wicked path open the doors to misery and nothing else. The contest
of the test is applicable to all kinds of human experiences. Thus the decisions that humans
make paves the future path for themselves.
Genre
The genres that can be found in Psalm 1:1–6is meditative in nature. It has been
written from the individual point of view and it highlights the concept relating to blessing.
It plays a vital role to establish the theoretical foundation of the sacred song. Here the
psalmist is basically expressing his opinions and views about life experiences
3
. The text
that has been selected is mainly dominated by the concept of ‘blessing’ that is bestowed

on people who follow the righteous path. At the same time, it highlights how the people
following the ungodly path suffer
4
.
Godly and ungodly deeds
The person who adopts the Godly approach opens the path to get blessed. It can
help him to lead a happy and content life. The individuals who choose the wicked path
while making decisions in life are bound to be unhappy because of the chosen path. The
text is relevant for the entire mankind. During the entire life, people come across
numerous situations and instances when they have to choose between the right and the
wrong. People can get blessings from God if they apply the Word of God while leading
their life
5
.
The text highlights how the individuals who live their life by having faith in God
and trusting the relationship with the Almighty are happy and blessed. There are a
number of things that have the ability to destroy and corrupt. Similarly, there are other
things that can strengthen, develop and make life more fruitful in nature. The passage
highlights how righteous behaviour canenhance the bond and relationship with the
Almighty. This is the core message that has been presented in Psalm 1:1–6. Mankind
needs to avoid wicked and negative things so that he can get closer to God and he can be
blessed
6
. The ungodly behaviour moves a person towards a wrecked state.

The Psalm 1:1-6 has been a focal point for interpreters and could also be
considered as the major point of initiating dialogue as well as controversy between
religions such as Judaism and Christianity
7
. The interpretation of the psalms as a
descriptor of the traits of an ideal righteous man is clearly evident in the interpretation of
the passage
8
. The meaning revolves around the various obstacles that man faces in the
course of his life and there are two options for facing the obstacles which are the right
and the wicked path. The passage text implies that even if righteous people face many
challenges in their journey, they are ultimately eligible to receive blessings of the
almighty
9
. On the other hand, people who select the wicked path are only picking up a
path leading to misery. It also shows that wicked people who are in the company of the
righteous would also not be spared from judgment. The journey of a righteous man is
aptly described as a seed which is planted only to reap the fruit in appropriate season
without any withering and prospering in any circumstance
10
.
The psalm’s structure is identified in two stanzas followed by a conclusion. The
first verse of the Psalm implies that there is a terminological identity established by the
Forefathers of the Church in order to correlate the ideas behind the two situations of
doing the will of God and feeling blessed. This factor clearly implies towards the
fostering of spiritual formation that can be clearly noted in growth of the Kingdom of
God or the Church on the basis of relating between doing the will of God by spreading
his word and his institution. However, in the psalmic context, happiness is not necessarily
attributed as the direct result of divine blessings and is dependent on the natural
consequences of personal deeds of a person. The verses also clearly imply towards the

context according to a hermeneutical analysis that is vested in refraining from counselling
the ungodly i.e. the people who do not believe in the ways of God. The passage also calls
the righteous man to stay away from the path of sinners who are defined as people who
do the same things throughout their life without any good.
The second verse of the Psalm is also a crucial contributor to the expansion of the
Kingdom of God or the Church because it reflects clearly on the ways in which
righteousness could be maintained. The contribution of the passage text to spiritual
formation could thus be clearly identified in the realization of a clear impression of the
word of God and developing qualities for addressing the needs for maintaining spiritual
formation throughout their life
11
. The awareness of an individual about the traits of
sinners and their ultimate fate could be a notable guide for them to adopt the path of God
by embracing his word. The clearly established context in the meaning of the passage
refers to the tenets for a righteous life and the things that an individual could do to stay
on it for reaping promising benefits in the end. Therefore, the passage could be essentially
considered as a significant contributor to the spiritual growth process of an individual
12
.
Part 3- Significance of the Passage (Final Version)
The life of Christians is guided by the words of Christ. The words that were said
by him were relevant even in the former times and it has a high degree of significance
even today. The ‘Church’ plays a vital role and takes the shape of a catalyst. It influences
the path that people follow to lead their lives. As per the Orthodox teaching, the authentic
Christian Life can be said to be a form of cooperation and synergy which exists between
human beings and the Almighty. The ‘Psalm 1:1–6’ passage highlights how the people

that follow the path that has been paved by the Lord are always guided by him
throughout their life
13
. The people who do not consider the word sof the Christ and
follow the wicked paths are considered to be sinners in the eyes of God. They ultimately
go towards the path of destruction and are never supported by the Lord.
The passage that has been covered here highlights how the people who follow the
right and honest path are always guided by the Lord. People can lead their life in two
ways. They can either follow the right path or the wrong path. The spiritual life of a
human being can be led in two ways – the positive way and the negative way
14
. The
individuals that follow the positive path or the righteous way are always guided by the
Lord. The human beings that follow the negative path are ungodly in nature. The people
following the wrong and wicked deeds will surely be judged by the Lord when the time
comes.
Implication
The ‘psalms’ is regarded to be one of the most important segments of Christianity
which helps the shape the beliefs and actions of the Christians. On numerous occasions,
human beings have to face numerous conflicting situations where they have to choose
between the right and the wrong. The message that has been delivered in the passage,
encourages Christians and the mankind to be a ‘righteous’ person instead of acting like a
sinner or a wicked person. It is regarded to be extremely crucial as people are encouraged
to differentiate between the right and the wrong. The message that has been delivered in
the passage is important for people who face tough and challenging situations. It inspires
people to follow the right path even if it is difficult. They do not have to worry about the

challenges and hurdles that they will face as the Lord will guide them and help them to
overcome the barriers that appear in their life.
The contrast between the ‘righteous’ individual and the ‘wicked;’ individual that
has been presented in the passage is highly relevant for people at all the times. This is
because people are motivated to follow the laws that have been laid down by the Lord
and act in a righteous and correct manner. The writer of the passage has highlighted the
fact that the ultimate judgment will take place. The human beings that adopt the ungodly
path will have to bear the consequences of going against the laws of God. The people
following the right path that is guided by the law of God have been said to be happy
15
. In
the present times, a number of negative elements have come into the human nature such
as greed and selfishness. These elements have adversely affected their life choices and
decisions and converted them into a sinner. The message that has been presented in the
passage highlights the fact that the ungodly and wicked behaviour that is exhibited by
human beings increases the gap between mankind and the Almighty
16
.When people
choose the unholy path instead of going with the godly route, the relationship between
them and God gets affected to a significant extent.
Application
The life of the Christians can be shaped properly if the people understand the
difference between the right and the wrong. They need to abide by the words and laws of
God while leading their daily lives. Such an approach can bring them closer to the
Almighty. The passage basically helps people to follow the specific principles that can
lead to the spiritual growth of mankind. By acting as righteous human beings, the spiritual

8
character of individuals can be strengthened. This growth can further act as a catalyst and
help them to make the righteous and godly choices in their lives. In the words of the
writer, the people who follow the right and fair path do not have to worry as they are
following the words that have been said by theLord himself. The tree shall bear the fruit
when the suitable time or season comes. The righteous humans can be called as the actual
Christians only if they act in a patient manner and continue to adopt an honest approach
while leading their lives.
The psalmist has stated that the people with the sincere and honest hearts need to
commit themselves to follow the right path throughout their lives. The pure hearty will
help to become closer to the Lord and be called as the actual Christians. Paul has stated
that the godly people who follow the godly principles do not need to lose hope and faith.
With time, the harvest of righteousness will become a reality.
The passage also highlights the cost that the people following the wicked path
have to face at a certain point in their lives for following the ungodly route. This element
of the ‘Psalm 1:1–6’ passage is crucial as the psalmist has stated that the people who try
to make wicked choices face the repercussions when the time comes. The people
engaging in the wicked deeds will have to bear the costs of their actions. According to
Paul, men and women have to face the wrath of the Almighty if they do not have faith in
the words of Jesus Christ. The human beings who have not showcased their faith and
trust in the Lord will face judgment for their wicked actions and wicked behaviour. They
will be separated from the Lord for good.
For Christians, the words that have been said by Jesus Christ act as law. They
must have faith in him while making their decisions in life. He will be the one who will
be overlooking them at all times and helping them to overcome different obstacles that
9
come along their path. The passage spreads the message that human beings need to have
faith in Jesus Christ
17
. They must understand the fact that God is always there to look
after them if they follow the honest and right path. Jesus Christ encourages human beings
to follow the right path and trust him so that they can be called as the real Christians.
The people that adopt wicked techniques to survive will ultimately have to perish because
the Christ will not be there to support or guide them
18
. But the human beings who follow
the words and laws if the Christ do not have to worry as Jesus will be there at all the
times to take care of them and reward them for their righteous actions and sincere
behavior.
In the passage, human beings can adopt two ways to lead their life. The righteous
approach will help them to strengthen their spiritual character and help them to strengthen
their bond with the lords. When people adopt the ungodly or wicked approach, their
spiritual character naturally weakens
19
. It also increases the gap between themselves and
the Almighty. God will ultimately judge all the people including the ones who follow the
righteous approach and the people that prefer the ungodly route. “God” is the ultimate
process of separating the good from the bad and the right from the wrong. During
thistime, the wicked people will be unable to withstand to endure the judgment that has
been passed by the Almighty. f

The psalmist has stated in the passage that God has started to distinguish and
separate the ungodly from the righteous and with time, the former will face the
consequences of their actions. Human beings need to always keep in mind the words that
