Abstract
In R. Sallis’s (2007) article, “From Data to Drama – The Construction of an Ethnographic
Perfomance”, Sallis is presenting his research and findings from studying the formation of an
ethnographic performance as part of educational ethnography. Sallis (2007) is writing an
ethnodrama and presenting it to boys in an all-boys school and recording their reactions and how
it affects them. The goal for the research is to study the multiple masculinities expressed within a
drama program and use that data to construct an ethnographic performance. Sallis (2007) is
conducting qualitative research, because the research is directly conducted in the culture of the
school and the data is collected as a passive observer. This is why Sallis (2007) is wrote an
ethnodrama based off his findings from the school. Sallis (2007) concluded that the male
dominated culture at the school had an adverse effect on the drama program. The teachers at the
drama program agreed and said that Sallis’s (2007) presence and writing the ethnodrama had a
positive effect on the boys motivation and attitudes towards the drama program. Sallis (2007)
also says that future researchers should be aware of ethical concerns (anonymity, working with
children) when conducting ethnodramas, but at the same time try to be as transparent as possible.
