Non-Christian Worldview Assignment
Secular Humanism is a worldview that puts human interest, values, and dignity above all
else (Stenmark, 2022). Those who follow this worldview do not believe in a God, gods, or any
other higher power. God is just a projection of man’s thoughts and desires (Halverson, 2021).
The Secular Humanism worldview will be used to answer the questions of origin, identity,
meaning/purpose, morality, and destiny.
Answering the question of origin, some say matter has always existed (Weider &
Gutierrez, 2013). Secular Humanism believes in evolution (Halverson, 2021). “God did not make
man in His image; instead, man made God in his image”. Personality and mind are also from
evolution. There is no divine purpose. Darwinism is often seen as the only option for how
mankind came to be on the planet (Weider & Gutierrez, 2013).
Secular Humanists believe they are more important than other living things. However,
they do not view themselves as superior to animals since they believe in evolutionary creation
(Weider & Gutierrez, 2013). Humans have the free will to be and do whatever they want
(Stenmark, 2022). This thinking is believed to be the cause of culture. To be human is a physical
and biological progression. If humans work together, they could build a better and more humane
world.
There seems to be mixed opinions on the question of meaning and purpose. Some think
the thought of meaning or purpose could be scientized or naturalized (Stenmark, 2022).
“Humanists believe our lives can have meaning without it being bestowed by God or it being
grounded in science”. There are also some who disregard the idea of purpose and meaning
altogether and that science has ruled these out. “Value, meaning, love, and purpose are illusions”.
Morality is recognized by secular humanism; however, it is viewed that humanity is
3
inherently good (Halverson, 2021). Education is all that is needed to see this and not religious
transformation. Humanity does not need a higher power to instill moral values. Relativism is a
common belief system among humanists. “What is right today may be wrong tomorrow”
(Weider & Gutierrez, 2013). Religion tends to teach the opposite, that humans are inherently
sinful and need God to redeem them.
Secular Humanism does not believe in any kind of life after death. How a person has
affected the lives of others is what lives on (Weider & Gutierrez, 2013). Meaningful activities
like community service and philanthropy are ways they will leave an impact after they are gone.
Man has little to no control over their existence. When life is over, it’s over.
