Experience with Theology
When I hear the word Theology we immediately think of God. God comes to our mind
when anything about the study of God or just talking about the Bible. Theos(GOD) and
logos(word) which is Greek words. Good theology is based in the belief that Gods exists, is
personal, can be known, and has revealed himself. Theologians devote themselves to a
passionate pursuit of knowledge from Gods word. The word theologian is used almost
exclusively for vocational theologians rather than for anyone earnestly devoted to knowing God.
Loving God means loving truth. God is a God of truth; he is truth. In Scripture all three persons
of the Trinity are vitally related to truth. In light of this relationship between God and truth, it
should be no surprise that the Great Commandment includes loving God with ones mind; “ And
you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your
mind and with all your strength “ (Mark 12:30) Fully loving God and obeying the great
Commandment requires actively engaging the mind in the pursuit of truth. It is to learn what God
loves and hates, and to see, hear, think, and act the way he does. Knowing how God thinks is the
first step in becoming godly (crossway.org)
I really never sat and thought about theology until now. As examined online it looks like
they are 4 types of theology.
•
Biblical Studies: The critical examination and interpretation of theological texts. The
Christian theology refers primarily to the Bible.
•
Church History: This is the study of how Christian theology has changed over time.
Christianity has shaped a great deal of human civilizations recent history. Dr. Aernie puts
it “ The historical engagement gives us an opportunity to study theology in our own
context and communities in light of what has come before”.
•
Systematic theology: Type of theology looks at how to formulate a coherent system from
doctrines of Christian theology. Christian theology is rooted in doctrine-the core set of
beliefs that make up Christian theology. Systematic theology allows us to organize our
beliefs into a coherent system. As a result systematic theology helps Christians to
consider how their beliefs about God relate to one another.
•
Practical theology: Is where various strands of theological thinking come together.
Practical theology helps guide living faith. It helps the intersection of faith and culture,
the impact of public theology, and the out working of Christian ethics.
With learning the 4 types of theology it really doesn’t matter which way you learn theology, it
only matters that you follow and progress your faith journey. (Insight.study.csu.edu.au)
