My research area is focused on motivation in the workplace specifically
looking and evaluating job satisfaction as it relates to performance. What I
initially looked at in terms of validation was the aspect of motivation being
identified as ‘intrinsic’ vs. ‘extrinsic’, however, as I engaged in this class
learning about the relationship between psychology and Christianity, I
now look at this from a different perspective. What I have learned
specifically from Wolters, (2005) with an integrated view is that the Bible
and the Scriptures can help us define motivation based on creation and
the ability for God to predetermine how we operate as an effective
employee versus one that has fallen and being defined as an ineffective
employee. This then further goes on to explain that once we have been
identified by God that we can use the science of psychology to further
define the why behind effort, work, application and execution of activities.
Psychology helps us understand with observation the repeated patterns
and habits of individuals so that we can maximize the output levels that is
mutually beneficial to the employee and employer to enhance the
relationship between the two.
Christianity has told us that each individual in the workplace is there for a
reason, they have been chosen for that field and it is that person’s calling
to give back as a servant leader for the community. They are an apostle of
God that has been specifically designed to manifest that skill and talent
for the greater good of mankind. To teach, nurture and guide all
individuals that follow in their footstep to make the workplace a haven of
positivity and productivity. This is what truly motivates an individual
because this is what they were born to do. I will be able to leverage this in
my studies for my research because as I continue to pursue this area on
the understanding behind motivation, one’s affiliation with God will help
me shape my research in better understanding why people do what they
do for a living.
From here I can implement science and search for empirical data that
support my research findings. I will be able to evaluate through
observation, feedback, evaluation and surveys to constantly get more
information about daily activities that will lead to an increase in
performance. With this information I will be able to determine what
strategies that an employer can administer to ensure that they are getting
maximum and optimal performance from all employees.
It was interesting to see how these principles were applied to understand
workplace challenges and problems specifically with conflict resolution
and employee relationships. I can see how individuals from the fall would
be affected in these areas because their negativity and sin has tainted
their ability to be reasonable and rationale. If all employees were of the
mindset from the creation, we would have harmony and stability in the
workplace. There would be homeostasis and chemistry among co-workers.
If a supervisor was able to identify with the Grand Narrative, then they
would be in a position to best understand their employees specifically the
fallen who would need additional attention and resources made available
to them.
This integrated approach of Christianity and the science of psychology will
only enhance the research that I have already established through all my
readings and interaction with my colleagues and peers at Liberty
University.
