HOMEWORK: ONE-SAMPLE T-TESTS TEMPLATE
This assignment is worth a total of 60 points.
•Content: point values vary but are indicated in the template and total 45 points.
•Format: point values vary but are indicated in the template for 10 pts. The remaining 5
pts are for placing answers in the correctly designated spots within the template in a
clear and easy to read format (e.g., all fit within the visible screen on the page);
demonstrating competency in written expression/grammar, spelling, and punctuation;
and uploading the template in an approved format (word or PDF). Thus, the maximum is
15 points for format.
According to statistics reported by the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI), 17% of
U.S. youth aged 6 – 17 experience a mental health disorder each year. You access data from
15 private Christian schools, shown in the table below. These numbers represent the
percentage of students who had a mental health disorder diagnosis within the last year. You
want to know if youth attending these private Christian schools suffer from mental health
disorders at a different rate than the larger US youth population.

1. Based on this scenario, what is the research hypothesis. Is it one or two-tailed? What
information did you use from the scenario to determine this? 5 pts content
The question is asking if the disorders are at a different rate than 17% which makes it
two-tailed because they want to know if it is higher or lower than 17%.
2. Create a histogram of the Christian school data. Present it as Figure 1, making sure
to include all required components for an APA formatted Figure (including a Title and Note).

15 Christian schools wanted to compare their own mental disorder scores among
students to the National Alliance on Mental Health scores. The National Alliance on Mental
Health score was 17% while the mean is 16% (SD = 3.54562) for Christian schools. A single-
sample t-test comparing the Christian schools and National Alliance on Mental Health had
similar results of t(14) = -1.092, p = 0.293, d = -0.282 CI [-2.9635, 0.9635]. The null hypothesis is
rejected – it concluded that the Christian schools does not have significant mental disorder rate.
A marketing team for a new energy drink, "VitalBoost," wants to determine if its advertising
slogan is effective in increasing brand appeal among its target demographic: young adults
aged 18-25. The slogan, "Fuel Your Day with VitalBoost," suggests that consuming the energy
drink enhances energy levels and productivity. To test the effectiveness of the slogan, the
marketing team conducts a study where it recruits 16 participants from its target
demographic. Each participant is shown an advertisement featuring the slogan and asked to
indicate his/her likelihood of purchasing the drink on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being very
unlikely, 10 being very likely). The data are shown in the table below. The marketing team
hypothesizes that, if the slogan is effective, the mean rating should be significantly higher
than the neutral score of 5 (indicating ambivalence).

5. Based on this scenario, what is the research hypothesis. Is it one or two-tailed? What
information did you use from the scenario to determine this? 5 pts content
It is one tailed because they hypothesize that the mean rating should be significantly
higher than the neutral score of 5. It has a specific direction.
6. Create a histogram of the scores from the 16 participants. Present it as Figure 2,
making sure to include all required components for an APA formatted Figure (including a Title
and Note). 5 pts content / 2 pts format

16 participants aged 18-25 were surveyed to see if the advertising slogan has an effect
towards the energy drink VitalBoost. The mean of the survey is 6.125 (SD = 1.36015). The
onesample t test is t(15) = 3.308, p = 0.002, d = 0.827, CI [0.4002, 1.8498]. The null hypothesis is
rejected because the slogan significantly higher likelihood scores compared to the test value of
5.
9. Assume results are statistically significant. Combined with this knowledge and the
effect size provided in your SPSS output, what is a question you would ask when discussing
the practical significance of these results? Why / how is this important / related to practical
significance *make sure your response is specific to this scenario – this is an APPLICATION
question* 5 pts
The practical significance is questionable because only 16 participants were surveyed. A
key question to ask is whether a sample of 16 individuals is large enough to represent the
broader population of energy drink consumers. With such a small sample, the results might not
generalize well to real-world settings, where consumers have more diverse backgrounds,
preferences, and purchasing behaviors. Practical significance requires considering not just
whether the slogan changed scores in this small group, but whether the effect is meaningful
and consistent enough to influence actual consumer behavior on a larger scale.
