HOMEWORK: BIG PICTURE TEMPLATE
This assignment is worth a total of 60 points.
•Content: point values vary but are indicated in the template and total 45 points.
•Format: point values vary but are indicated in the template for 10 pts. The remaining 5
pts are for placing answers in the correctly designated spots within the template in a clear
and easy to read format (e.g., all fit within the visible screen on the page) and uploading it
in an approved format (word or PDF). Thus, the maximum is 15 points for format.
Pintrich and colleagues (1991) developed the (MLSQ) to measure various factors that may
impact student learning. I conducted a study in an introductory psychology course and am
providing a truncated dataset that has been altered for the purposes of this assignment – you
will use the M8 Big Picture Data SPSS file to complete this assignment. You can use Variable
View to see the value labels for the demographic questions and extra descriptions of some of
the variables as needed.
#1 Screen the demographic data (age, sex, race, classification) to find the one error. You do
not need include any SPSS output for this question. Rather – answer the following: What is it?
How do you know it is an error? What is the participant ID associated with that error? *Note –
delete the error in that cell but keep the rest of the participant’s data for all subsequent
questions. 2 pts
The error is the person whose sex has a value of 4. There are 0s for males and 1s for females, but
1 person has a 4. The participant’s ID is 43.
#2 Run the necessary descriptive statistics based on each variable’s scale of measurement and
what makes most sense for: age, sex, race, and classification, and paste the output in the space
below. *Make sure you use the entire dataset – only the one error should be deleted, but the
total number of participants should remain unchanged.
1 pt / variable = 4 pts

#3 Present the descriptive statistics as would be done for a Participant subsection of a Method
section. Age, sex, and classification should be presented in text, and you should create the
most appropriate graph for race. Make sure the graph for race is properly formatted, including
a Figure # and title, and has a proper call-out in the text (2 pts format). Note that since it is
presented graphically, the same information should not also be stated using words (as that’d be
redundant). Hint: There is an example in the IBM SPSS Workbook Part 2 on pages 200-201
for how to present the information in text, and you’ve been creating figures and using callouts
throughout the semester
2 pts / variable = 8 pts content + 2 pts format for figure

#4 One of the subscales for resource management included “time and study environment” (“TSE” in
the SPSS file). This consists of eight questions, three of which are reverse scored (indicated by * - #
3, 7, 8).
1. I usually study in a place where I can concentrate on my course work.
2. I make good use of my study time for this course.
3. I find it hard to stick to a study schedule. *
4. I have a regular place set aside for studying.
5. I make sure I keep up with the weekly readings and assignments for this course.
6. I attend class regularly.
7. I often find that I don’t spend very much time on this course because of other activities. *
8. I rarely find time to review my notes or readings before an exam. *
These questions were answered are on a scale of 1 – 7, with one indicating “not at all true of me” and
7 being “very true of me”.
Reverse code TSE# 3, 7, and 8. (Hint: This was shown in the IBM SPSS Workbook Part 1). Calculate
whether there is internal consistency for TSE (see ch. 4 if needing a review of how to do this). Make
sure you use the reverse-coded columns as needed.
Copy / paste an image of the appropriate SPSS output for internal consistency in the space below.

#5 Write an appropriate Materials subsection of a Professional Research Paper relating to the
TSE subscale, making sure to include the internal consistency and its interpretation. There is
an example in the IBM SPSS Workbook Part 2 on pages 200-201. 4 pts content
The TSE subscale was a questionnaire/survey presented to the participants to get their
perspectives on their study habits. The Likert Scale was used to measure their responses with 1
being “not at all true of me” and 7 being “very true of me”.
#6 Have SPSS calculate the mean TSE score (making sure to use the reverse-coded columns as
needed). Hint: this is also shown in the IBM SPSS Workbook Part
Run appropriate descriptive statistics on TSE average and grades. Provide the descriptive
statistics output for these two variables below.
Write the results of these descriptive statistics as would be done in a Results section. Hint:
There is an example in the IBM SPSS Workbook Part 2 on pages 200-201 for one variable –
you’ll have to report two in this section. However, you do NOT have to exclude anyone from
the analyses.

#7 Conduct the appropriate statistical test to assess whether time and study environment
(average TSE) is related to grades. Copy / paste an image of the appropriate SPSS output in the
space below.
#8 Write up the results from the SPSS output in your previous answer using complete
sentences and following professional conventions. Hint: We did this last week in Module 7! 4
pts content / 2 pts format
A Pearson correlation was used to determine the relationship between TSE and grades. The
results were not statistically significant, P = .07.
#9 Conduct the appropriate statistical test to assess whether you can predict one’s academic
success (grades) based on their average TSE score (regardless of results from previous sections
– this is for educational purposes). Copy / paste an image of the appropriate SPSS output in the
space below.

#10 Create an appropriate figure to best demonstrate the prediction analysis and data. Make
sure to include the figure number, title, and notes, and to do so using APA format! Hint: We did

<Answer>
#11 Write up the results from #9 & 10 using professional conventions, making sure to include
a callout to the figure created in the previous question. Hint: We did this last week in Module
7! 4 pts content / 2 pts format
A regression test was conducted to determine if TSE could predict participants' grades. The
results show an insignificance, F(1,56)= 3.26, p= .08. This means that grades could not be
predicted based on TSE scores.
#12 Briefly discuss what “practical significance” means in general (as discussed in this course
– hint: review chapter 7). Specific to this study, what are some questions you would ask when
questioning its practical significance? 2 pts
Practical significance refers to how a study could be applied to real life scenarios. For example, if
a study is conducted on the memory of animals, the findings of that study could be practically
significant in how it applies to humans.
