That's Your Perception Assignment
Sensation and perception are two fundamental processes responsible for our ability to
sense and interpret the world surrounding us. Even though the systems responsible for sensation
are similar between individuals, how we perceive the same event can vary from person to person.
We will explore the factors that create differences in perception between people, examine
whether such differences indicate differences in reality, and discuss whether we can be confident
that our perceptions reflect reality.
According to Shawn George's "Introduction to Psychology from a Christian Worldview,"
several factors can create differences in perceptions from person to person. One of the most
significant factors is our individual experiences and expectations. Our past experiences and
expectations can influence how we perceive an event and the differences in the perception. For
example, if two people watch a movie, one person may perceive it as exciting and engaging,
while the other may perceive it as boring and uneventful based on past experiences and
expectations.
Another factor that can create differences in perceptions is individual biological
differences. George notes that differences in our sensory receptors, neural pathways, and brain
structures can affect how we perceive sensory information (George, 2020). For example, some
people may have better visual acuity than others, or people, may have a more developed sense of
smell, which can influence their perceptions of the world around them.
Individual experiences and biology can influence perception, but this does not necessarily
mean that these differences indicate a difference in reality. George argues that the objective
reality of an event or object exists regardless of how different individuals may perceive it. For
3
example, if two people are looking at a tree, the tree itself exists as an objective reality,
regardless of whether one person perceives it as beautiful meanwhile the other perceives it as
ugly.
While objective reality may exist, it can be challenging to determine whether our
perceptions accurately reflect reality. Many factors influence our perceptions, including our
experiences, expectations, and biology. Therefore, it is essential to approach our perceptions
with a healthy dose of skepticism and to seek out multiple perspectives to gain a more accurate
understanding of reality.
However, these differences do not necessarily indicate differences in reality; objective
reality exists regardless of how individuals perceive it. Nonetheless, it is crucial to recognize
that our perceptions influence several subjective factors, and we should approach them with a
critical and open-minded perspective.
In conclusion, while the systems responsible for sensation may be similar from one
person to another, differences in perception can be influenced by individual experiences, biology,
and other factors.
