Case Study
Anne (age 37) and Joel Jackson (age 38) have been married for nine years. They began
their relationship eleven years ago. This is Anne’s first marriage and Joel’s second. Anne and
Joel share two children, Dean (age 8) and Daphne (age 5). Joel also has two children from his
previous marriage, Jacob (age 19) and Alexa (age 17). Both Anne and Joel are Christians and
devoted to their home church, attending service weekly and actively participating in their
community group serving as a host home.
The family is middle class, and a two-income household. Anne graduated with a
bachelor’s degree when she was twenty-three, while Joel finished his degree at the age of thirty-
five. Anne is an accountant and Joel works in IT. Anne has worked for the same accounting firm
for thirteen years and has moved up the ranks to a director position. Joel has been stable at his
current company for nine years.
The couple is currently deciding whether to continue their marriage. Joel has had two
admitted affairs, both occurring early in the marriage and Anne has recently engaged in an
emotional affair with one of Joel’s friends. Outside of the affairs, Anne feels lonely and unloved
in her marriage with Joel while he feels he cannot do anything right and any effort that put is
forward is unacknowledged and unappreciated. They rarely communicate throughout the day or
in evenings and do not spend quality time together. Neither can express themselves without
raising their voices and any disagreement often leads to a fight filled with insults and degrading.
When avoiding fights, they tend to ignore or become passive-aggressive towards each other,
sometimes involving the children. Both drink and become more aggressive when they drink
heavily.

Section Two
Values
Anne’s parents have been married for over forty years and she does not believe in
divorce. Being an accountant leads her to be conservative with money, believing firmly in tithing
and saving.. She is an involved parent, present at every game, field trip, class party, and activity
for her children. Anne tries consistently to adopt an authoritative parenting style to discipline
while also embracing grace and love (Moitinho, 2020).
Joel’s parents divorced when he was a teenager. His own belief in marriage is to hope for
the best, but part ways when necessary. He enjoys being with his children but does not feel the
need to be an active part of every activity on their schedule. Never being taught how to properly
handle finances, Joel would rather spend than save. He enjoys the latest tech, clothes, and cars
and believes it is a reward for working hard. Joel tends to adopt an authoritarian parenting style,
putting in place several guidelines and rules for the home (Moitinho, 2020).
Vision
Anne and Joel wish to blend their values and worldviews and become a marriage grown
out of covenant, grace, empowerment, and intimacy (Balswick, 2014).
Mission
Anne and Joel have a mission to love God above all else and show that love through the
way they treat each other, their children, and their covenant of marriage.
SMART Goals
Physically speaking, Anne and Joel create a goal to begin working out twice a together
week. Additionally, they both will cut back on their alcohol intake by not drinking during the
weekdays.

Psychologically, Anne and Joel are committing to expressing their feelings in a calm
manner, as opposed to yelling. To do this, both have agreed to put their feelings in writing for
each other for the time being and have both agreed to a cooldown contract (Ripley et al, 2014).
They also commit to gaining the support of their community group and being more honest about
their struggles by asking the group to participate in a marriage study with them.
Relationally, they are committing to bi-monthly date nights with just the two of them.
Furthermore, they commit that the dates will not include going to the movies, as they are not able
to talk during those times. Anne and Joel have also made a goal to spend three weeknights
together after their children go to bed.
Financially, Anne and Joel are committing to set and adhere to a monthly budget. They
are both committing to make compromises on the budget to find a happy median between their
differing views on finances. Additionally, they are committing to pay off their credit card and
student loan debt by the end of 2023.
Professionally, Anne and Joel have set a goal to work together to find a better
professional fit for Joel with more room for growth and opportunity. Both Anne and Joel are
going to update their resumes and LinkedIn profiles by the end of the month.
Recreationally, Anne and Joel are committing to taking an anniversary trip in May 2023,
without the children. Additionally, they are signing up for couples cooking classes for three
months.
Spiritually, they are committing to pray every morning and evening. While they together
pray individually, they have never engaged in prayer as a couple. They also both set a goal to
read the entire Bible in 2023. They will keep track of each other’s progress and discuss weekly.
