1) Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina
Although the Food Bank is located in one of the United States’ best places to live, our data
and experience show hunger remains a serious problem in central and eastern North Carolina.
In our service area, just under 600,000 individuals are unable to consistently access enough
nutritious food to live a healthy, active life, or they went hungry because they had to skip
meals. Hunger has grown into an epidemic, and is more prevalent than ever, affecting more
than just the families living at or below the poverty line.
Food insecurity has emerged as a defined reality for hundreds of thousands of hard-working
Americans who, even if they are working, cannot keep food on the table. About 16% of the
total population– working families, children and seniors– struggle to access nutritious and
adequate amounts of food on a regular basis. The Food Bank is working to provide more
access to the healthiest food possible to the families we serve, and continuing to build
solutions to reduce the existing meal gap.

Christian Community in Action provides financial support, including for rent and housing,
for residents of Cary, Morrisville, Apex, Holly Springs, Willow Springs, Friendship and New

people to become stable and self-sufficient.
In June of 1968, a small group of Christians, brought together by Margaret Keller, met
together to address a common concern: how to best serve our neighbors in need. From
different races and denominations, but united in Christ, they agreed to work together under
His guidance to help meet some of the needs of the Cary and Morrisville community. With
backing from local churches, Dorcas Ministries was formed as “Christian Community in
Action”. Dorcas Ministries has always, and continues to, strive to find solutions to the
increasing and different needs of the community, hoping to make a difference in the lives of
our neighbors.
Dorcas Ministries was incorporated by the state of North Carolina and granted 501 (C)(3)

3) Family and Community Empowerment Services
Almost 50 years ago Fuquay area residents needing shelter, coal, gasoline, medicine or
transportation visited area churches with their financial requests. Small church discretionary
funds limited the amount of financial help that was granted and church staff spent time trying
to find other financial resources for these needy residents.
In 1964, the Fuquay-Varina Ministerial Alliance formed the Family Aid Council of Fuquay-
Varina. Its mission was defined in this way, “The Family Aid Council is a cooperative project
of Christian assistance to human need, combining the professional services of a battery of
helping agencies with personal Christian love in action. It is FOR CHRIST’S PEOPLE
THROUGH HIS CHURCHES.”
The aim of the Council was to assist residents with immediate emergency needs and to advise
those in need of agencies that could help on a more extended basis.

The government of North Carolina, through its social services organization and other
resources, can provide qualified low-income individuals with Emergency Assistance. The
programs are focused and helping families with children, seniors, and disabled who are
experiencing a financial emergency or crisis. Depending on the circumstances of the
applicant, funds can pay for housing costs, electric bills and utilities.
Housing costs covered can range from emergency funds to pay rent to prevent an eviction or
the state can try to arrange money to apply towards a partial mortgage payment. The goal is
to really prevent homelessness across North Carolina, and by taking a proactive approach of
paying for these housing costs both the state and the family benefit.
Emergency utility assistance is offered for a number of bills, including electric, water, gas,
heating, and more. Priority is given to applicants with a disconnection notice. Once again,
this financial assistance is for qualified low-income individuals who are faced with an
unexpected emergency or hardship situation.

1) Office of Women’s Health
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Office on Women's Health
(OWH) was established in 1991 to improve the health of U.S. women by advancing and
coordinating a comprehensive women's health agenda. During the early 1990s, OWH
focused on developing women's health as a specialized issue for government action and
attention alongside efforts by partner organizations. These issues included research, health
care prevention and service delivery, public and health care professional education, and
career advancement for women in health and scientific careers.
Thanks to OWH's leadership, women's health is now firmly rooted in the national health
landscape and many great achievements have been made in women's health. Today, OWH
focuses on emerging women's health priorities to meet the needs of women and girls.
Working collaboratively with federal agencies and partners, OWH supports a variety of
campaigns, programs, and policies around health disparities, violence against women, HIV
and AIDS, trauma-informed care, health across the lifespan, and the provision of health care.
