I really enjoyed reading your discussion board post this week about informatics and specifically
health literacy. This was also the literacy that I researched and wrote about for the forum this week
as well. You stated, “Health literacy relates to nursing informatics. Health literacy means more than
just the ability to comprehend the health information being given to the individual.
“For our patients, it involves a complex set of skills and attributes that include: comprehension, the
appraisal of health care information, social support, confidence and motivation to act as partners in
management of their health.” This is such an important point as a patient can have very good
comprehension skills and still not understand something related to his or her care or condition.
Patients are inundated with information throughout their hospital or other healthcare experience.
During this period of time when it is more difficult to absorb, process, and retain information due to
various medical conditions (Haruna & Hu, 2018). Sometimes there is just so much information to
absorb that even the most literate person can feel overwhelmed. In addition to this, health
information, at times, can seem like a completely new language presenting words, phrases, and
concepts that the patient has simply not been exposed to before. For this reason, many times our
role as the nurse is so important in helping the patient understand what the doctor has said and what
the written material says. I would wish to expand more on the topic of health literacy.
The Impact of Low Health Literacy
Low health literacy has significant implications for both individuals and healthcare systems. It
contributes to health disparities and inequities, as individuals with low health literacy often face
challenges in understanding healthcare information and navigating the complex healthcare system.
This can result in increased healthcare costs and utilization, including more emergency room visits
and hospital readmissions. Furthermore, individuals with low health literacy are more likely to
experience poor health outcomes and struggle with medication adherence and self-care practices.
Informatics and Health Literacy
Informatics, with its technological advancements, provides promising avenues to enhance health
literacy. EHRs offer accessible and organized health information, empowering patients to actively
engage in their care. Mobile health applications enable individuals to access health information and
tools for self-management, fostering improved health literacy and promoting self-care behaviors.
Digital health platforms provide educational resources and interactive content that can be tailored to
individuals' literacy levels and preferences. Health information exchange (HIE) facilitates seamless
communication and collaboration among healthcare providers, ensuring that individuals receive
coordinated, well-informed care.

Informatics interventions can be tailored to address the diverse needs and literacy levels of
individuals. Health information can be presented in formats that are easily understandable, using
plain language and visual aids. Interactive and multimedia approaches, including videos,

serious games can make health education enjoyable and encourage active participation. Additionally,
cultural and linguistic considerations should be taken into account to ensure content is relevant and

methods are necessary. Validated measurement tools can assess health literacy levels before and after
