Introduction
Over the past 200 years, nursing has evolved, grown, and developed into a highly
skilled and unique discipline set apart from other health care professionals. Nursing is an art,
science and incorporates its own body of language, which is distinctive. This esteemed
designation and respect from fellow healthcare partners were achieved with the assistance,
acknowledgment, and recognition of several nurse theorists who laid the nursing foundation.
These trailblazers or nurse theorists "developed nursing theories in the 1960s; however, they
realized that there was a corresponding need to identify criteria or develop a mechanism to
determine if these theories served their intended purposes" (McEwen, M., Wills. E,.2018
p.94). "Nursing theories are organized bodies of knowledge to define what nursing is, what
nurses do, and why do they do it" (Wayne, G.2020 para 1). Nursing theories guide the
practice of nursing at a more tangible and individual level. "Theory evaluation is defined as
the process of systematically examining a theory "(McEwen, M., Wills, E.,2018 p.95).
Florence Nightingale's Environmental Theory has immensely influenced this author's nursing
