I think it is great that you can speak to a specific quality improvement (QI) project that is lead by
an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN). I was speaking to a Nurse Practitioner tonight and asking if she was
aware of any QI projects spearheaded by APNs, and she could not think of any. My hospital sounds very
similar to yours, a lot of master’s prepared nurses and Bachelor’s prepared nurses spearhead projects
such as staff development, central line infections, and catheter associated infections. The Chief Nursing
Officer at my hospital also holds a Doctorate of Nursing Practice in Administration in which she uses to
leads and direct the nursing system. Our health system does a lot of work specialization (McEwen &
Wills, 2019, and utilizes multiple nurses for projects.
I would love to know what your trauma team is working on for pediatric traumas. Do you have a
sperate team for pediatrics? Right now, we are working on a structural empowerment project to develop
our pediatric nursing trauma team to work independently from the Adult Emergency Room. We are in
the beginning stages but are very excited about it. We are a level two pediatric trauma center with a
level one trauma center for adults, so the primary focus is on adult trauma. Right now, I am just having
the Emergency Department and God direct my path for improvement for both my department and
myself. As the book of Proverbs states “in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy path”
(King James Version, 1611/2017, Proverbs 3:6).
Congratulations on the success of the Obstetrics Trauma Simulation! It is very difficult to deliver
in the trauma rooms, so education on that topic is always welcome. The nursing administration in the
Emergency Room is also working on formulating an algorithm for triaging post-partum women that are
at risk for eclampsia. We are finding that more women are presenting to the Emergency Room after
delivery with hypertension, and they are waiting long periods of time because staff does not realize that
woman can develop preeclampsia or eclampsia in the post-partum period (Powles & Gandhi, 2017).
