Journal Entry: Sex Assignment
This week’s assigned reading was very interesting to think about. Since I am from a
Christian family, this type of topic is very rarely talked about. Also, this topic is rarely talked
about in my household because it was always an awkward conversation to have. In my
household, it was always said to “wait until marriage” though I never actually knew what the
big deal was, I had always thought it was because you want to join flesh with someone who will
be
in your life forever and that you would not want to give someone part of you if they were not
going to be there for a lifetime. After this reading, I realized that there a more than one reason
to wait until marriage other than respecting one’s self.
The first discussion question asked me to make a decision for a couple named Hannah
and Charles. The issue was that Charles would want Hannah to watch pornographic videos with
him since he had an issue getting excited for Hannah. Referring to page 166 of the assigned
reading states that there is a distinction between humans and animals when having
intercourse. The bond between the couple along with sharing love is the main distinction
between us and animals when it comes to intercourse. It also states that sharing love makes us
be a closer image of God. I personally do not think that Hannah should go along with this to
satisfy Charles. In my opinion, I think that there is no love being shared by him and Hannah
should not have the insecurity of him possibly cheating at work. Being that the couple is also
married, Charles should not want to cheat and try to work on his relationship with his wife. To
me, that shows that
Charles is only into intercourse for his own benefits and not what it is meant for. Along with
being married for 14 years, I think that Charles should consider Hannah’s feelings when asking
her. However, the couple may still have a chance to rebuild their relationship and sex life if they
were to go into couples counseling. I feel that Charles and Hannah may need to work on their
love in the relationship in order to want to share their passion with one another in intercourse.
In this reading, it seemed like there were a couple of different opinions in the discussion
replies from my fellow classmates. Some students' discussion board stated that heavy petting was
totally against Christian beliefs, though classmates that were not Christian did not think that this
scenario was a big deal. The question for this discussion was if a young couple pleasing one
another sexually was morally right for them to do. The young couple wanted to wait until
marriage for sex though, I feel as if they were beating it around the bush on a “technicality”. I do
agree that this is still considered sex because it is a sexual act. My discussion board did not come
off the way intended to my fellow students, they replied by saying that this act is sexual which I
totally agree however in the text, I had thought I read that an author stated that having an orgasm
is only considered sex, looking back at the text, I am not sure where I read that or even if it was
stated in the text. I guess that having that statement in my discussion, really showed where my
classmates stand with this discussion even though it was a mistake. Though in the comments, we
agreed that the couple in the discussion was having sex.
The next reading discussion consisted of a gay marriage proposal. As I said in the
discussion post, I respect that Stan has accepted God into his life since I feel that this is less
likely in today’s society. I also respect that Stan has consideration of the Bible teachings when it
comes to his daily and sexual life. In the discussion post, I said that Norman should not be with
Norman especially if they do not have the same views. However, reading the discussion posts by
my classmates, I had the opinion that some are really strict on what scripture says. I agree with
scripture when it comes to homosexuality though I do not feel the need to change their minds nor
shame them for being how they are. If the homosexual couple does not bother anyone around
them and shares the same type of love with one another, then I should not give them my opinion
and mind my own business. I do understand how the strict Christians are thinking when they
share their opinion however I do not feel as if it is necessary to judge someone based on their
sexuality. God writes out our life until the very end, He sees into the future for each and every one
of us. Not saying that God will change His mind about sexuality however God already
knows and I trust in Him.
Lesbian schoolteacher discussion is a scenario that should be a no-brainer in my opinion.
Yes, the principal had her own beliefs due to her religion but she should not feel the need to share
the teachers’ personal life with her students or the student's parents. The Bible says not to
humiliate others or gossip. I believe that the teacher is contradicting herself because she is
gossiping and sharing someone else's business because of scripture and Christianity however the
Bible also says not to share others’ business or humiliate them.Proverbs 26:17, states,
"Interfering in someone else's argument is as foolish as yanking a dog's ears”. Recently there was
a case like this on the news a couple of months ago, however, the teacher was in the wrong
because she was teaching the kids about different sexuality. There were books in the classroom
library about sexuality and assignments/lectures about sexuality which I thought were too far
across the line. Grades 1-6 students are way too young to be thinking about sexuality, and they
should not have to learn or learn about it until later on in life. As long as Sarah’s personal life
and opinions do not affect her teaching/job, I think that the principal should stay quiet about this
matter.
After reading the discussion board from my classmates, I am sure that I answered the
wrong questions that were assigned. I will answer the question about human cloning. I do not
think that human cloning is such a great idea, and it makes me wonder why people would want
to clone themselves. In my opinion, I think that human cloning is going against God’s plan just
because it seems as if this were another way to avoid death. Death should not be feared nor
avoided. This opinion is also shared with the Jewish community. I agree with my classmates
stating that science and religion are often at odds due to their circumstances. I think that in some
ways, science often questions the existence of God but of curiosity.
Once again, this is another scenario that I believe goes against God’s plans. Choosing an
offspring is something that was man-made. There are some good things about genetic
engineering when it comes to diseases, hereditary genes that do not want to pass along to
generations. However going as far as choosing the child’s hair color, weight, eye color, and
height go beyond the means of science. I think that the energy going into genetic manipulation
could be used for hereditary conditions, and not for the physical characteristics of the offspring.
Being married, having sex, and creating offspring with that person is a gift and should not be
tampered with. The child that is created with one another will have the same characteristics and a
combined physical image of both of the parents. Imagine if God genetically manipulated and
only chose the humans that fit into a “category”. We are all unique in our own way and God
loves all of us for being humans. I think God would want us to share a child and create an
offspring that combines both parents, and not to create a child that fits into our wants and society.
The additional assigned reading questions were about the use of birth control, HPV
vaccinations, and funding sex studies. I do not think that using birth control is a big deal just
because there is a difference between abortion and precautions. A person using birth control as a
precaution is a good idea because if someone is not ready for a child but has a child, there is no
promise that the fetus will be loved as it needs. I think that birth control ensures that the parents
are in a good place to have a child. God may have plans for someone to have a child though God
will make it happen if need be.
I do think that it is a good idea for the government to fund sex studies, there is so much
information that is still missing when it comes to the reproductive system. The government
should be able to have access to more information about the reproductive system before passing
a bill on it. HPV vaccination is not a big deal in my opinion. Just like birth control, it is a precaution
however less severe. HPV shot is protection and I do not really have an ethical objection against
it.
