On March 30, 2022, COMS 640 put on an expedition in which they all chose to work with a nonprofit and
give short pitches to other students and faculty. Upon entering the room to talk with all of the tables,
and hear all of the presentations, everyone was given $300 of play money to donate to the table that felt
as though they deserved the donations. To start the student and faculty that participated walked into the
room, where eight tables were set up ready to discuss their nonprofits with the audience. They were all
highly prepared, and excited to talk to their audience about their nonprofits, and how they are changing
lives today. Three tables that stood out were the ones that focused on helping sex traffic victims (Cry
Freedom), one that focused on helping families in all walks of life (Patrick Henry Family Services), and
lastly one that helps get kids to camp, and learn about the love of God. (Camp Cho-Yeh)
Cry Freedom is a nonprofit that focuses on helping sex traffic victims in any way possible. The nonprofit
offers a lot of different ways in which help to sex traffic victims can be comforted and loved. The first way
that they are helped is through hotel outreaches, which has the staff supply food and other necessities
to those who may be living in hotels, the homeless, and any individual residing in local camps. They also
focus in on hotels that are locally know for drugs and prostitution, to see if there is a chance to save
anyone being trafficked. The second way in which victims are helped is through jail outreach, this allows
the volunteers and staff to reach out to people who are not in the best situation, and to spread light into
their life, no matter the situation. Lastly, the outreach has emergency shelters for anyone in need, and
will relocate victims consistently for their safety. Cry Freedom is all about saving anyone in a sex
trafficking crisis, and they do a spectacular job at helping those in need through the love of Jesus Christ.
Patrick Henry Family Services, the second outreach that stood out helps to build communities of faithful
relationships that ensure child safety, and the restoration of families. This nonprofit runs camps for
children, has counseling available for familied, children, or anyone else in need, and so much more. This
nonprofit is really serving families and the children involved in these families and making sure that they
are living the best life possible in the situations that they may have been handed. Speaking to this
nonprofit really helped to imagine how each family life at home isn’t the same, and to consider others at
home lives. This nonprofit is doing incredible work connecting families and helping them strengthen
their family life day by day.
The last nonprofit that excited everyone who heard about it, was Camp Cho-Yeh. This camp puts on
summer camps each year, and they touch the lives of so many kids across America. The camp is based in
Houston, and it is so exciting and fun to be a part of. While hearing the pitch, you can clearly tell that all
who are involved in this organization is filled with the Holy Spirit, and that they thoroughly enjoy what
the Lord is doing through each and every staff member. There are scholarships that are also offered by
the camp to support some kids who aren’t able to pay, and there are so many volunteer opportunities.
This camo truly captures the essence of a fun-loving summer camp, where they point the glory all back
to the Lord.
While it was so great to hear about all of the missions that are going on today, there was the competition
aspect of who would win the most amount of donations for their nonprofit. (with the fake money we
were given to donate) While Cry Freedom did take third place, none of the other two that I discussed did
place, rather a sports outreach (that was very entertaining and wholesome to hear about) took first
place, well deserved. This expo was a great success and a true testament to how hard these students
worked to get to know their nonprofits, and to send the message to others.
