Name: ______________Junseong Park________________________
This course-long portfolio, developed over multiple weeks, will give you the opportunity to engage with a particular research topic
while utilizing the various steps of the inquiry process. Once you have completed each week of the project, you will compile each step
from Weeks 2-6 into this template and submit it in the link named “Inquiry Portfolio Project Final Submission”. Remember that you
are compiling previous work here, and failure to complete each step may result in failure for the assignment.
Week Two Topic Selection

Inquiry assignment: Topic Selection
The role of a pilot demands various abilities related to aviation safety, including situational awareness and quick decision-making
skills. One important aspect is the limit on flying hours for pilots, with a daily flight time restriction of 8 hours regulated by the Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA) under aviation safety laws.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) aviation safety regulations encompass essential standards that pilots must adhere to,
covering not only flight hours but also various safety measures. The 8-hour flight restriction for pilots is just one component of these
regulations. For long-haul flights, measures such as rotating pilots in two shifts or allowing for extended flight hours in specific
circumstances are implemented. The primary motivation behind these time constraints is to prioritize passenger safety.
Recent research findings indicate that pilots engaged in flights exceeding 5 hours experience elevated levels of fatigue and stress.
Even with an 8-hour limit, pilots often encounter issues such as stress, fatigue, and diminished concentration after just 5 hours of flight.
Such conditions pose potential threats during flight and may compromise safety, emphasizing the significance of restrictions on a pilot's

flight hours.
I have delved into the reasons behind regulating pilot flight time, its correlation with aviation safety, and the detailed examination
of its impact on both pilots and passengers. Restricting the daily flight time of pilots can be deemed as a crucial regulation for ensuring
passenger safety and overall aviation safety.

Inquiry Project Portfolio: Research Question
Research Topic: Health of Airline Pilots
Research Question: How does the mental health status of pilots impact their flying abilities?
I chose this topic because I want to study why the health of pilots is important and how it relates to their flight. FAA said that the
mental health of pilots interacts with flight safety and passenger safety. This is ethically relevant, and I would like to investigate how the
pilot's mental defects have caused the problems in the flight accidents so far. I think this has a lot to do with my flying studies.

The value and relevance of Sources
I wanted to research the health of airline pilots and how it impacts flying. Therefore, I chose the topic “How does the mental
health status of pilots impact their flying abilities?” This research purpose is to show how mental health issues among pilots have
contributed to past accidents and to explore the relationship between pilot mental health and aviation incidents.
To achieve this, I selected sources including reports on civil aviation accidents in the United States between 1999 and 2003, as
well as studies from the Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands.
These sources are expected to provide insights into the relationship between pilot mental health and flight safety. Furthermore,

Week Six Statement of Intent
Original Submission:
Statement of Intent
I chose this topic because becoming a pilot is my career goal, and I believe that maintaining both physical and mental health is
crucial to acquiring the qualities of a pilot. I aim to investigate the impacts of mental health on accidents and how such psychological
issues can affect flying.
I think this research will aid in my preparation and studies to become a pilot, emphasizing the importance of pilot health aviation.
Through my research, I seek to present arguments on why mental health is crucial for pilots.
Now that I know what I know, this is what I would change if I were to explain my statement of intent:
