Article Critique II: Secondary Area of Study
Purpose of Study, Research Methods, and Results
Healthcare has been the backbone of the United State of America for decades and the
purpose is to serve the American people and their needs. We’ve done an incredible job getting
medical technologies in this country but inspite of that, we’ve still in the lower half of giving
care to the citizens of this nation (Gunja et al., 2023). In the United States, the topic of healthcare
has been a constant debate and one that we should be concerned about. The cost of Americans
pay in healthcare services have been an alarming one to say the least. Despite the spending, we
have not been able to achieve the numbers set to achieve, and we have not had better health
outcomes that we’ve hope for. In the article “Health Disparities in the United States: Social
Class, Race, Ethnicity, and the Social Determinants of Health (3rd ed.).”, It helps us to recognize
some of the reasons to why American is behind the curve despite the large amount of money
spent on healthcare (Barr, 2022).
The purpose of this study is to link public and community healthcare and resiliency to see
how best both can come together to solve the issues on PTSD which is an ongoing crisis in the
healthcare field. In the article it spoke on race, ethnicity, and social determinants and how best
we can make healthcare better for its patience (Barr, 2022). The extreme high cost of healthcare
not only burdens individuals and families but it also put a strain on the nation's economy and
public health infrastructures not to mention race and ethnicity which is a factor on receiving
adequate care. The United States of America spends approximately 17% of its GDP on

healthcare alone which is on heard of for a country that’s still sitting at the bottom of the
healthcare rankings (Barr, 2022). It is significantly higher than any average spending of other
high-income countries in the world (Gunja et al., 2023). Despite the U.S. investing millions, the
care of individuals with PTSD haven’t been invested in. Over the years, mental health has been
overlooked, underfunded and thousands of our military services members and veterans have
been taken for granted after laying their lives on the line to fight for our freedom. Healthcare
disparities are mostly found in different racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups and this can be
found mostly in the United States of America because race is always an issue with healthcare
(Barr, 2022). The costs of prescription drugs, medical procedures - surgeries, and overnight
hospital stays does contribute to the financial hardships faced by many Americans which makes
healthcare impossible access. Dealing with a mental break down and having PTSD episode is no
better because of the lack of resources.
Interdisciplinary Focus
The article shows the connection between resilience and public and community health
and how it can better serve us as individuals. Healthcare focuses on individual care, while public
health focuses and emphasizes on the well-being on the community and the entire population.
Public health does initiate preventative measure to promote healthy living and addressing PTSD
on the highest level and it is one way have helping with combat related and physical trauma.
Military resilience does play an important role in support of healthcare and public health efforts
to ridicule any issues that may arrive. The military's healthcare system uses TRICARE to
provides medical care and services to all active-duty service members, veterans, DoD members
and their families. Resiliency is about fighting through mental, emotional, and social well-being

while dealing with deployment, jobs assignment and families back home. It focuses on
preventive care, mental health support from counselors and top-ranking medical officers, and the
community engagement which serves as a platform and model for a wider healthcare system.
After further analyzation of the article, The challenges of public health strategies and
methods does place resilience principles into the healthcare system which offers great deal of
solutions. Public health interventions like PTSD campaigns, support programs, and interview
prevention techniques can reduce most incidents and suicides of PTSD individuals. Combating
mental health-PTSD is a complex issue and requires a multifaceted approach to address it and
making sure methods are in place for our patience that are suffering. Strengthening every line of
connection between public and community health and military resilience, It can and will create a
more efficient, equitable, and resilient healthcare system.
Biblical View
Using a biblical approach to public and community health is showing God’s grace to
man. This biblical worldview emphasizes hope for those suffering from mental health, resiliency,
and the support of the community to help guide their way through mental health challenges such
as PTSD within the context of military resiliency and public and community health. In the bible,
the book of Romans 5v3-4 reads “And not only that, but we also glory in our sufferings, because
we realize that suffering develops perseverance, and perseverance produces character, and
character produces hope” (NCB, 2019). This verse addresses the importance of man seeking
God’s healing. The church and the congregation are a pilar for individuals to lean on during
times of illness and is a refuge for support for those that are battling mental health-PTSD. The
book of Galatians 6:2 reads, “Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law

of Christ” (NCB, 2019). This verse emphasizes on how important it is to be aware of the
struggles that mental health brings. The Integration of the bible, resilience, and public and
community health can support the initiatives which fosters an approach for healing and an
overall well-being for mental health.
