A role in healthcare is never an easy task. It requires physical and mental capabilities and
are skills I use. Those in healthcare must also be dedicated to their profession and always put the
patient first. These are skills I have not only had instilled in me but honed throughout my
healthcare journey.
My background did not start in healthcare, but I knew in high school I wanted to help
people in some way. While caring for my ailing grandparents I realized the caring profession of
nursing was on my radar of careers. I began the necessary coursework and over time
accumulated all the hours and coursework needed to become a registered nurse. Prior to
becoming a registered nurse, I completed a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies which
included a concentration in psychology which is also beneficial to my nursing career. During the
course of pursing my bachelor’s degree, I have not only had the chance to develop new skills
while fostering and growing my existing skill set, but I have also been able to adapt to virtual
learning. I will be able to use the assessments of mental health to help those patients who suffer
from dependency of chemical substances as well as those who suffer from mental illnesses such
as dementia and Alzheimer’s. I strongly believe the communication skills I have developed,
paired with my adaptation to virtual learning, throughout the course of my studies in pursuit of
this Bachelor’s degree has prepared me in a way that will allow me to live into the roles and
responsibilities of the registered nurse position I have applied for.
The submitted resume will not only show the education history but also show the work
experience I have completed that will benefit my nursing career. Although it may seem a degree
in interdisciplinary studies is not relevant to nursing I believe the various concentrations helped
me prepare for balance in patient care, written communication, and changes in patient status. My
educational experience has taught me perseverance and exposed me to varying situations and

circumstances to push and challenge my abilities. I have had experience in multiple units of the
hospital that used various charting systems and types of patients. I have worked with
psychiatric, medical, surgical, critical, and obstetric and gynecological patients. Each are of
expertise has taught me something different in nursing that will aid in my critical thinking which
is key for assessment and treatment of patients. Included in my experience is that of a surgical
technologist where I worked with surgical patients in labor and delivery where the keen sense of
prediction was utilized to aid the surgeon. As a surgical technologist I learned sterile technique
and multiple procedures and the knowledge of each. This could be an asset should a physician
need assistance with any procedures completed at bedside. Working in these multiple areas has
also given me a wider sense of team member adhesion. It takes a team to care for patients and a
nurse at the forefront for the patients’ best interest is where I plan to excel.
During my studies I also learned how time management is an important role to have as a
student and employee. Completion of my studies also included working full time as well as wife
and mother. I often worked long days that would include course work as well as time at my job.
I found it necessary to manage all of these to maintain financial stability. It was not an option to
lessen my work hours or leave the job to complete my coursework. Although there were times I
wanted to quit I pressed on for the goal I wanted to complete. I feel the balance of work, life and
school taught me the best in time management to be able to care for my patients better. Time
management and team adhesion are keys for any nurse to be successful in her career and her unit
of work.
Critical care has always been my passion and specifically cardiac critical care. As a
young nursing assistant, I was able to care for patients who underwent a vascular or cardiac
procedure and was intrigued at the success rate and details of the procedure. This led me to

pursue relationships with those physicians who performed the surgeries or procedure and build
rapport for future knowledge. In these relationships I have increased my knowledge with deeper
study and details of the cardiac system. I have studied the procedures and done research on them
to see other approaches in the care and recovery of the patients. Regarding my application for
this position I encourage you to review how my coursework has prepared me for the position and
become an asset to the team.
