DSM-5 SUMMARIES ASSIGNMEMT
“All of the following information was taken from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5th
Edition (American Psychiatric Association, 2013) unless otherwise noted.”
Overview – a brief overview of the general category. In one or two sentences, identify the
characteristic(s) that all the disorders in the category share. (Example: in the Depressive
disorders, all the disorders are characterized by feelings of sadness.)
Disorders – For each disorder in the category, write one or two sentences that provide a brief
description of the disorder. In the Overview, you noticed what is similar across the disorders in
the category; in the Disorders section, you will identify the main feature of each disorder that
distinguishes it from the rest of the category (e.g., time frames, severity, types of symptoms, etc.)
Risk and Prognostic Factors – Choose one disorder from each category and provide a brief
summary of the risk and prognostic factors as found in the DSM-5.
Bipolar and Related Disorders
Overview
<A brief description of this category>
Bipolar disorder affects the mood of individuals and usually consists of intense highs and lows.
Bipolar disorder can interfere with one’s ability to make good judgements. An individual’s
mood, energy level, activity level, and concentration can waver due to bipolar disorder (NIHM,
2020).
Disorders
<Include a one-sentence (approximate) summary of EACH disorder in the category,
including “Other Specified” and “Unspecified”, noting what distinguishes the disorder from the
others. Be sure to summarize the disorder, rather than state one symptom of the disorder.>
The different types of bipolar disorders include bipolar I disorder, bipolar II disorder, and
cyclothymic disorder.
Risk and Prognostic Factors
<Choose ONE disorder from the category and provide a summary of the risk and
prognostic factors as noted in the DSM>
The factors that play a role in an individual developing bipolar disorder include brain
structure and functioning along with genetics. A traumatic event can also trigger bipolar
disorder. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, it is common to have different
disorders alongside bipolar disorder such as anxiety, ADHD, substance abuse, and eating

disorders (2020). A huge risk of bipolar disorder is having suicidal thoughts and ideation. The
DSM-5 mentions that 25% of people who commit suicide struggle with bipolar disorder (2013).
Depressive Disorders
Overview
Depressive disorders differ from other disorders in that individuals usually experience feelings of
sadness.
Disorders
There are an array of depressive disorders including disruptive mood dysregulation disorder,
major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Anxiety Disorders
DSM-5 SUMMARIES ASSIGNMEMT
Overview
Anxiety disorders deal with constant worry and fear to the point of effecting the ability to
carry out different tasks in everyday life.
Disorders
The different types of anxiety disorders include panic disorder, agoraphobia, specific phobia,
social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, and selective
mutism.
Panic disorder is when an individual experiences panic attacks. Panic attacks usually happen
suddenly when an individual experiences intense fear.
Agoraphobia has to do with extreme fear of utilizing public transportation, being in open or
enclosed spaces, being in a crowd, or standing in a line.
Separation anxiety is when an individual has extreme fear of being apart from someone to whom
the individual is attached or dependent upon.
Social anxiety disorder has to do with instances of being in public where an individual has a
chance to be scrutinized or judged by others.
Risk and Prognostic Factors
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, genetic and environmental factors can lead
to an individual developing an anxiety disorder (2018). Having a family history of anxiety and
going through stressful events can potentially lead to anxiety disorders. Physical health can
worsen anxiety symptoms such as heart arrhythmias or thyroid issues along with different
substances and caffeine intake (NIMH, 2018).
