Learning Activity 2 Instructions
Topic: Health of Virginians
In this learning activity, you will review secondary data
sources for details about the health of Virginians. Target 1
Virginia county or community of interest in the following
data sources; briefly scan the health assessment
information to get a more detailed picture about the health
status of Virginians in that specific locale or region. Then,
look more closely at the health data concerning 1 of the 5
health ranking determinants you wrote about in Learning
Activity 1.

County Health Rankings
SMART: BRFSS Data
Following the principles of epidemiologic inquiry, answer
the following questions regarding the information you
uncovered about 1 health determinant in your selected
county or community. Give your response in a post of
300–400 words.
Person: Describe the population expressing the
determinant
oHow many (percentage of population or rate) are
described by this determinant?
oHow is the determinant expressed in the population (age,
gender, education, socioeconomic status, or other
characteristics)?
oCompare segments of the population (who has the
most/least, at greatest/least risk)?
Place: Describe the location with regard to the
determinant
oIs the determinant seen more in urban or rural regions?
oWhat other characteristics define the prevalence of the
determinant in the region (housing, geography,
topography, etc.)?
oCompare other locations with the one you selected (how
does prevalence compare in neighboring counties, the
state, or the nation)?
Period: Describe the time trends of the determinant
oOver the past few years, has the prevalence rate
decreased or increased or stayed about the same? (i.e., is
it getting better or worse?)
oCompare the time trends of the state and the nation with
those of your location. Are they better, worse, or similar?
Conclusion: From the information you gathered about the
health determinant, describe a priority population within
the locale you investigated in which to address the health
determinant of focus. This will be the focus of a public
health intervention you will develop across the remaining
learning activities.
Topic: Virginia's Health Rankings
The obesity pattern seems to be steadily rising in Virginia, so addressing it first will be my first
action. Although seeming to be average, physical inactivity will help tackle not just the issue of
obesity, but also causes of diabetes and the low ranking of high blood pressure.
All of these four concerns are interconnected, and working on one can unintentionally improve
the other. The fifth determinant that I can see significantly enhancing Virginia's health rating is
in immunizations for Adolescents, Children, Meningococcal, and Tdap. While such
immunizations are required for school-aged children in certain jurisdictions, they are not in
Virginia, considering the dire need and the strong medical justification behind them. The bottom
line is that the vaccinations are more popular than the infections they are supposed to shield us
from. Each individual who receives their vaccinations, be it their children, their pets, and so on,
protects themselves and plays their role in protecting the community around them.
I still find it peculiar that the parents are a primary force standing in the way of these
immunizations. When it comes to immunizations for male and female HPV, the score was more
than 10 points higher.

Topic: Virginia's Health Rankings
Scientists identify five health determinants of a population. For instance, in Virginia's
states, the health status will be explained based on the scenarios referred to as health
determinants: individual behavior, biological factor, social environment, health services, and
physical environment. The state of Virginia has most determinants in great condition; the health
status challenge is less than other states. The healthiest state is Colorado, while Mississippi is the
less-healthy state. According to the statistics, 36.3 percent of adults in Virginia are overweight,
whereas 28.5 percent have obesity. The obesity rate in this state is 15.3% in kids. Obesity is a
complicated condition that can affect any person. In this state, the prevalence among adults is
greater in females than males.
On the other hand, adults who range 45 to 64 tend to be at high risk than those over 65
and 18-44. In terms of place, Pacific/Hawaiian Islander adults have a higher risk of getting obese
than white, multiracial, Hispanic (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2020). African-Americans
have a greater percentage than all other races and ethnicity but not more than Pacific/Hawaiian.
This determinant trend is increasing, and thus the state needs to intervene to ensure this illness is
controlled. Among adults, Virginia's obesity rate is higher than in some states, being ranked at
35th. Weight loss is a reliable method of improving or preventing obesity-related chronic illness.
In terms of social and economic factors, employed individuals tend to have more chronic
illnesses than the unemployed.
Most individuals are median household income, and the rural places experience more
poverty than city regions. There exist multiple homicides, suicides, juvenile arrests, and firearm
fatalities in terms of community safety. In conclusion, the priority population would be West
3
Virginia, where obesity is prevalent from the information collected. A healthy beginning is
significant to a healthy future for the West Virginia community.
