Research studies have shown that there is a high number of students at risk of facing
reading challenges (Child Illiteracy in America: Statistics, Facts, and Resources | Regis College,
2020). The reading challenges are evident in low reading speeds, poor comprehension, and
reading attention at grade level (McAlenney & Coyne, 2011). As a result, the students are
disadvantaged when placed in an ordinary classroom with other students. In an attempt to
eliminate these inequalities, Step Up for Students strives to provide a reading environment that
accommodates the student’s weaknesses. The mission of Step Up for Students is to provide
support and empowerment to families to find appropriate learning options for their children. The
grant proposal endeavors to assist students at risk to improve their reading skills to the level in
which they can catch up with their peers and get them ready for high school education.
The program has identified potential schools with students exhibiting reading difficulties.
The first school of interest is Orchard Middle School having approximately 276 students out of
which 20 % of the students are at risk. considering the number of students at risk, the program
intends to purchase 5 computers equipped with assistive reading software and scanners. The
program consists of three phases i.e. planning, implementation, and evaluation. It is estimated to
cost approximately $16,504 to run the program at Orchard Middle School. The program has
developed a comprehensive evaluation plan that mirrors the goals and objectives of the project to
monitor the success of every milestone. The project is expected to release the first cohort of
students at risk to the ordinary classroom by June 2023.
