Was American education during the colonial and revolutionary-era distinct from what was
found in other parts of the world?
The “Colonial Era (1607)” and the “Revolutionary Era (1776-1783)” in America was
very different. Individuals of this period mostly depended on church and family as the only
means of education. There were very few schools during that era. It was the parents’
responsibility to decide how much learning their children needed, and most of them did not even
make their kids attend school (Kerber, 1976). Few children attended schools because they were
only told to read for religious purposes. Higher levels of education did not exist until 1636, when
Harvard University was formed. However, in 1701 Yale was formed and then Princeton later in
1746. These colleges were made only for men and were used for the single purpose of training
religious leaders. In these colleges, the Bible and other religious texts were the only things
taught. In addition, schools during this era were not taken to make money or become of a higher
social class, but it was an extension of the church and home (Miech et al., 2001).
The population grew rapidly throughout the revolutionary period, and more schools were
required. Leaders like. Madison, Jefferson, and Franklin viewed that the new world could not
flourish or succeed without education. They also perceived that education had to be altered to
prepare the individuals for this new world (Yeboah, 2005). There were several proposals to
increase education during this period. In 1779, Jefferson suggested the more overall diffusion of
“Knowledge Bill in the Virginia council”, which proposed designs for teaching children all
through Virginia. The bill similarly recommended frequent checks of understudies’ development
and a suggestion to sponsor the schooling professions of productive understudies freely.
An important component of the bill was that educational greatness was offered
significance over approachable abundance or standing. Additionally, Jefferson settled at the

University of Virginia and efficiently received his thoughts executed and received on a more
widespread scale (Yeboah, 2005). However, due to the 10th Amendment of the constitution,
which ensures teaching a state obligation, the national administration’s job in education was
