Greater Middle East Warfare
Geography is a significant influence on military tactics today as well as in the past. The
location was frequently more critical than strategy when deciding the outcome of a conflict or a
fight in the past (Klinke,2020, p, 450). Control of a high ground or mountain pass provided a
considerable advantage to one side over the other. Military geography provides a critical vantage
point from which to study the structure of military operations at various scales. Different
operational contexts and environments necessitate different types of geographic information.
According to the Biblical story of the Battle of Ai, the failure was caused by Achan's past
wrongdoing, for which he was stoned to death by the Israelites. The Israelites then set fire to Ai,
turning it into a "permanent heap of ruins." They took the livestock as loot when God instructed
them. "Joshua's troops camped on the north side of Ai, with a valley between Ai and them. "As a
result, they stationed the forces north of the city, with the main encampment and the rear guard
west" (Joshua 8:11, 13). A hill called Jebel Abu Ammar lies directly North of the location
(Godswar.org , 2018, para 14). It's the tallest point in the area, and it's a great tactical location for
military operations.
When Joshua and his army arrived at Ai, he stood on the city's Northside "in front of" it
(Joshua 8:11). A wall with a gate would serve as the city's "front." In 1995, ABR discovered the
remains of the gate on the city wall's north side, which were built to Ai's exact specifications
(Answergenesisorg.,2021, para,11). Also discovered by the ABR team were socket stones that
held the gate's doorposts in place. When reading Joshua 7–8, we can see that the Lord told
Joshua to divide his army (Joshua 8:2). Joshua followed orders and set up an ambush group to
the west of the city (Joshua 8:9, 8:12). Ai candidates must be able to plan an attack while
remaining undetectable. The "Wadi Sheban," west of Maqatir, is a narrow valley with a high
3
incline (Answergenesisorg.,2021, para, 13). This valley was close to Ai and had adequate
verticality to conceal Joshua's ambush troops.
At the time of the Israelite invasion into Canaan in the late fifteenth century BC, Ai had
to be occupied. Finding pottery dated to the same historical period is the most uncomplicated
technique to verify such an occupation. Sling stones, storage jars, jar rims, and other items from
Joshua's time have been discovered. The city's west wall, which is 12 feet (4 meters) thick, has
been unearthed (Answergenesisorg.,2021,para,14). The pottery along the border and the size and
form of the wall are all consistent with Joshua's historical period. The main Israelite force of
25,000 soldiers marched North of Ai, within sight of the city but separated by a ravine.
Meanwhile, west of Ai, an elite force of five thousand men gathered in the back for an
ambush (between Ai and Bethel). As if preparing for another frontal assault, the main body
surged forward. The Israelites pretended to retreat while the King of Ai launched a spoiling
attack, as they had done in the previous assault (Godswar.org, 2018, para 17). Every Ai and
Bethel Canaanite soldier was enticed out into the open, steep canyon (Wadi Muheisin) in pursuit
of the retreating Israelite attack by this strategy. The ambushing group in the rear penetrated the
city and set fire to it. The main body and ambush force turned around again, trapping the Aians.
A separate detachment had been dispatched to prevent Bethel from assisting Ai.
