Thomas Jefferson developed the Virginia Declaration of Rights and attended
for the legislature to be included as the opening paragraphs of the declaration of independence.
Because Virginia was the first of the thirteen colonies to develop and implement a decoration of
rights, their legislature provided vast influence in the development of many other archaic
legislation. One of the most notable documents that the Virginia Declaration of Rights influenced
is the American bill of rights. Passed by the United States Congress on September 25, 1789, The
Bill Of Rights was instituted. This document proposed 12 amendments that served as a joint
resolution for all the colonies' opposing ideologies while utilizing the Virginia Declaration of
Rights as a basis.
The decoration of independence is an eloquently worded document that states
the principles on which the United States of America is based on. Passed on July 4th 1776, the
decoration of independence marks upon America's freedom from Great Britain. The anniversary
of this document is celebrated every year as America's interdependent day. Because of this, the
declaration of independence serves as the most infamous American legislation and has a
symbolic reputation for American freedom. Similarly to the American declaration of
independence, the virginia bill of rights serves as a basis for American legislature. The Virginia
Declaration of Rights was the first state legislature to be passed between the colonies. Because of
this, the Virginia state legislature serves as a symbol for the foundation of the American
government. The Virginia Declaration of Independence has 16 sections presenting principles and
guaranteed rights for the Virginia citizens. Many of the principles prevalent throughout the
Virginia Declaration of Rights hold similar meaning to those prevalent within the American
declaration of independence. Section 4 of the Virginia Declaration of Rights states, “ That no
man, or set of men, is entitled to exclusive or separate emoluments or privileges from the

Community. “Section 4, virginia declaration of Independence, 1772.)'' Similarly, the infamous
line from the declaration of independence states “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all
men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,
that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. (The direction Of Independence,
1776.)” Both statements from these documents present the same idea that All American citizens
share equal rights to one another. Additionally, this principle held vast importance to the
founding fathers and the values they based America upon. Because of the exstream control the
king had on the people of Great Britain the social hierarchy and uneven wealth distribution
prevalent in Great Britain during the time America was fighting for independence, the founding
fathers highly valued the implication of equal rights.
The Virgina decoration of rights was the basis for the bill of rights. Because of this,
both historic documents share many similarities. The Virginia Declaration of Rights was
formally adopted at the Virginia constitutional convention in June 1776, while the bill of rights
was not ratified until December 1791. Because the bill of rights was greatly influenced by the
Virginia Declaration of Rights, the documents have many parallels. Both stating similar
American principles and values, while providing a firm foundation of the United States
government. However, the bill of rights proposes only 12 sections and applies to the country of
america as a whole different from the 16 sections and limited rule of the Virginia Declaration of
Rights. Additionally, the bill of rights provided a joint compromise that allowed farmers and anti
federalists to feel valued through the inclusion of the United States constitution.
In conclusion, the Virginia declaration of independence served a vital role in the
founding of the American government. The Virginia document provides the Virginias with apt

Rights and served as a basis for other state legislation and the development of America's
declaration of independence, Bill of Rights, and the United States constitution. Because
Virginia's decoration of independence was such a strong and powerful piece of the American
legislature, it proved the foundation of the United States government.
