The Stamp Act
I will be writing about the Stamp Act in my summary and explaining my thought on it.
The stamp Act is an Act that was passed by the parliament taxing all the paper use. The stamp act
required that all material printed, be printed on paper with an official revenue stamp (Brooks,
Rebecca ). The Stamp Act was extremely unpopular with the colonists and the majority thought
that this tax was a direct violation of their rights under English rule. The purpose of the Stamp
Act was to generate revenue to pay down Great Britain’s war debt from the French and Indian
War and to raise money for British troops who were stationed in North America in order to
protect the new land won in the war and prevent uprising from the French colonists living there
(Bi-Gale). The Stamp Act Congress was held in New York City and was the first significant
collective colonial response to British measures (Brooks, Rebecca). “The colonist’s reaction to
the Stamp Act was one of anger and outrage. Many felt it was a blatant attempt to make money
off the colony. Since they had no legal representation in Parliament at the time the act was
passed, the colonists argued that the act violated their rights as English citizens by taxing them
without their consent, according to the book American Passages” (Brooks, Rebecca)”.
My knowledge of the Stamp Act was the same before and after doing this summary.
Because the Parliament was able to pass the stamp Act, they were able to help restock the
finances after the Seven Years’ war with France. I even read something where it said “Although
the price of the stamps was actually very little, the colonists worried that if they allowed this law
to happen, there would be plenty more to follow” (Brooks, Rebecca). Along with the stamp Act
2
that I think was important is that part of it would be used to maintain several regiments of the
British Soldiers to also maintain peace between both the Native Americans and North America. I
liked learning and getting a better understanding of what the Stamp Act actually was. Obviously
we are taught it at a way younger age, but me researching it now probably changed my
understanding of it from when I first learned about it.
