Napoleon Bonaparte is often evaluated on his military contributions, but he was also a notable
ruler. Evaluate the extent to which his rule did or did not fulll the goals of the Enlightenment OR
the French Revolution. Identify specic ideas and/or goals and specic ways in which they were
fullled or not. Write three full paragraphs in which you make two to three different points about
Napoleon's rule.
Napoleon Bonaparte advanced some Enlightenment and Revolutionary ideals through legal reforms such
as his Concordat with the church and the Napoleonic Code. These legal reforms were designed to
establish legal equality, protection of property rights, and religious freedoms. Bonaparte abolished the
feudal system and made a way for the lower class to achieve levels in occupational elds and
educational/scientic elds previously denied to them. Napoleon effectively governed using an
administration that aligned with the ideals of the Enlightenment, by establishing a centralized and uniform
system of state power.
However, even with these advancements of the lower class and the establishment of social programs (like
education and the cultural arts), Bonaparte also restricted liberties and commerce, which were contrary to
the ideals of the Revolutionary Enlightenment goals. He shifted from emancipating the neighboring
countries from "feudalism and monarchies" to charging those countries and draining them nancially to
build an empire. He became an constitutional elitist, jealous of the British naval dominance and enacted
the Continental System and invaded Russia. The Continental System violated fee commerce and imposed
restrictions on other government's economies, where the attempted invasion of Russia denied citizens
(Russian) of their liberty. These actions were more reminiscent of the old feudal monarchies than of the
advancing freedoms and progressive values of the Revolution and Enlightenment age.
Napoleon's combined military genius and his original desires for genuine reforms based on the
Enlightenment values of rationality and legal equality should have created the perfect leader to rebuild
France into a strong nation. However, with those glorious victories (military) and enormous population
(from providing personal freedoms to the lower class) inated his ego, leading to unnecessary wars,
violation of other people's freedoms and commerce and reinstating a monarchy in France - by way of
establishing an empire. Napoleon did modernize France, but he did so via establishing an empire and not
by adhering to the core values of Enlightenment.
