Introduction:
“Leading with Cultural Intelligence: The Real Secret to Success” is a book authored by David
Livermore, an expert in cultural intelligence and global leadership. The central thesis of the book
revolves around the concept of cultural intelligence (CQ) and its significance in today’s
globalized world. Livermore argues that traditional forms of intelligence, such as IQ and EQ, are
no longer sufficient for effective leadership in diverse and multicultural environments. Instead,
he suggests that individuals and organizations must develop cultural intelligence to navigate the
complexities of working across different cultures successfully.
Livermore defines cultural intelligence as the capability to function effectively in culturally
diverse settings by understanding and adapting to various cultural norms, values, and behaviors.1
He emphasizes the importance of developing four key capabilities: CQ drive (motivation), CQ
knowledge (cognition), CQ strategy (meta-cognition), and CQ action (behavior).2 By honing
these capabilities, individuals can enhance their ability to lead effectively in cross-cultural
contexts.
The book provides practical strategies, tools, and case studies to help readers enhance their
cultural intelligence and apply it in real-world situations. Livermore highlights the benefits of
cultural intelligence, such as improved communication, collaboration, decision-making, and
overall performance in diverse teams and organizations. He also addresses common challenges
faced by leaders operating in multicultural environments and offers insights on how to overcome
them.
Livermore’s work underscores the importance of cultural intelligence as a critical skill for
leaders in today’s interconnected world. By embracing cultural diversity and fostering a culture

of inclusion, individuals and organizations can leverage their cultural intelligence to drive
success and achieve sustainable growth in a globalized marketplace.
Overall, “Leading with Cultural Intelligence” serves as a valuable resource for leaders,
managers, educators, and anyone seeking to enhance their effectiveness in multicultural settings.
Livermore’s comprehensive approach to cultural intelligence offers practical guidance for
developing this essential skill set and navigating the complexities of leading across cultures.
Lessons Learned:
The lessons that I learned and will discuss briefly are CQ drive, CQ knowledge, CQ strategy, CQ
action, and Return of Investment (ROI). I will be following the order of the book however, after
completing my own assessment the order would be different.
CQ Drive:
Livermore defines CQ Drive as the motivational dimension of CQ, is your level of interest,
drive, and energy to adapt cross-culturally.3 In the context of ministry, having a high CQ drive
can significantly impact the effectiveness of communication and outreach efforts across diverse
cultural contexts. According to “Leading with Cultural Intelligence: The Real Secret to
Success,” individuals with a high CQ drive are more likely to seek out opportunities for cross-
cultural interactions, actively engage with people from different backgrounds, and demonstrate a
genuine interest in understanding and respecting cultural differences.4
In the realm of ministry, a high CQ drive can enable practitioners to build meaningful
relationships with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, navigate potential cultural
barriers, and effectively communicate the Gospel in a way that resonates with different
audiences. By demonstrating a genuine curiosity and openness towards other cultures, Christians

can foster trust, mutual respect, and collaboration within multicultural communities, ultimately
enhancing the impact of their ministry efforts.
Overall, developing a high CQ drive is essential for Christians engaged in intercultural
communication for present and future ministry. By cultivating a strong motivation to engage with
diverse cultures and embracing cultural differences as opportunities for learning and growth,
Christians can effectively bridge cultural divides and promote unity within the Church.
CQ Knowledge:
Christian Intercultural communication is a crucial aspect of present and future ministry, as it
involves engaging with diverse cultures to spread the Gospel effectively. Cultural Intelligence
(CQ) knowledge plays a significant role in shaping the success of Christian intercultural
communication within ministry contexts. According to “Leading with Cultural Intelligence: The
Real Secret to Success,” individuals with high CQ knowledge possess the ability to understand
and navigate cultural differences, leading to more effective communication and collaboration
across cultures.5
CQ knowledge equips Christian ministers with the necessary skills to engage with people from
different cultural backgrounds in a respectful and understanding manner. By being aware of
cultural nuances, values, and beliefs, ministers can tailor their communication strategies to
effectively convey the Gospel without causing misunderstandings or offense. Additionally, CQ
knowledge enables ministers to build trust and rapport with individuals from diverse cultural
backgrounds, fostering meaningful relationships that are essential for successful ministry
endeavors.6

CQ knowledge significantly influences Christian intercultural communication for present and
future ministry by enhancing understanding, fostering effective communication, and building
relationships across cultures. It equips ministers with the tools needed to navigate cultural
differences sensitively and promote cross-cultural collaboration in spreading the Gospel.
CQ Strategy:
Cultural Intelligence (CQ) strategy plays a significant role in shaping the success of Christian
intercultural communication efforts. According to “Leading with Cultural Intelligence: The Real
Secret to Success,” CQ strategy encompasses the ability to understand and navigate cultural
differences effectively, leading to improved communication and relationship-building in
intercultural settings.7
In ministry, CQ strategy can greatly impact intercultural communication by enabling individuals
to adapt their message and approach according to the cultural norms and values of the audience.
CQ strategy can help churches avoid misunderstandings and conflicts that may arise due to
cultural differences. By being aware of and sensitive to cultural nuances, individuals can
communicate their message in a way that resonates with diverse audiences, ultimately furthering
the mission of spreading the Gospel globally.8
CQ Action:
In the context of Christian missions and outreach, CQ Action refers to the ability to adapt one’s
behavior effectively in diverse cultural settings, demonstrating respect, empathy, and
understanding towards individuals from different cultural backgrounds.9 By applying CQ Action
in their interactions with people of various cultures, missionaries and ministers can build trust,

foster meaningful relationships, and effectively convey the message of Christianity across
cultural boundaries.
In the area of Christian intercultural communication, CQ Action enables practitioners to navigate
cultural differences sensitively and skillfully. It empowers them to engage in meaningful
dialogue, address potential misunderstandings, and bridge cultural divides that may hinder
effective communication. Moreover, by demonstrating cultural intelligence in their actions,
Christian leaders can set a positive example for others to follow, promoting inclusivity, diversity,
and mutual respect within the Christian community.
For present and future ministry endeavors, integrating CQ Action into Christian intercultural
communication practices is essential for fostering cross-cultural collaboration, promoting unity
amidst diversity, and advancing the mission of spreading the Gospel globally. By embracing
cultural intelligence as a core competency in their ministry efforts, Christian leaders can enhance
their effectiveness in reaching out to diverse populations and nurturing cross-cultural
partnerships that transcend linguistic, ethnic, and social barriers.
Return of Investment (ROI):
Return on Investment (ROI) plays a crucial role in shaping Christian intercultural
communication for present and future ministry. In the context of global missions and cross-
cultural interactions, ROI refers to the tangible and intangible benefits gained from investing
resources such as time, finances, and energy into intercultural communication efforts within
Christian communities. The effectiveness of these investments can significantly impact the
success of present and future ministry endeavors by fostering understanding, trust, and
collaboration among diverse cultural groups. By investing in developing cultural intelligence and
enhancing cross-cultural communication skills, Christian ministries can build stronger
8
relationships with diverse communities, leading to increased impact and effectiveness in
spreading their message globally.

In conclusion, “Leading with Cultural Intelligence: The Real Secret to Success” emphasizes the
critical importance of cultural intelligence in leadership roles. The book provides valuable
insights into how leaders can effectively navigate and leverage cultural differences to drive
success in today’s globalized world. By developing cultural intelligence, leaders can build
