Introduction
This study evaluates the usability of a technical instruction manual created for
assembling a LEGO Connects Mini Helicopter. The manual was designed to guide users through
a simple build using modular LEGO components, divided into three sections: landing gear, body,
and rotor. The objective of this study was to determine how effectively users could follow the
instructions to complete the build, and to identify areas for improvement. We hypothesized
that the manual would be intuitive and effective for users of all experience levels, resulting in
high satisfaction and low error rates.
Method
Participants
The study involved 100 participants: 40 females and 60 males, aged 20 to 60.
Participants were selected to represent a range of experience with LEGO, from complete
novices to hobbyists and educators.

Procedures
Participants were given the instruction manual and the required LEGO pieces. They were
asked to complete the build independently, following the manual. Observers recorded task
completion time, errors, and user behavior. After the build, participants completed a survey
rating the manual’s clarity, ease of use, and overall satisfaction.
Environment
Testing was conducted in a quiet classroom setting with consistent lighting and seating.

The majority of participants successfully completed the helicopter build using the
manual. However, some users experienced confusion with part identification and visual
alignment. Key findings are summarized below:

identifying parts without color-coded visuals. Experienced users completed the build quickly but
noted inconsistencies between written steps and part diagrams.
Discussion
The results indicate that the instruction manual is generally effective, with high
satisfaction and low error rates. The numbered steps and modular breakdown were praised for
clarity. However, the parts list lacked sufficient visual labeling, and some diagrams were
misaligned with the corresponding steps.
Recommendations include:
•Enhancing the parts list with color-coded visuals and labels
•Placing diagrams directly beside the steps they clarify
•Breaking multi-action steps into single-action instructions
•Including troubleshooting tips after each section
These changes would improve usability for novice users and reduce build errors.
Conclusion
This usability study confirmed that the LEGO Connects Mini Helicopter instruction
manual is largely effective but can be improved to better support users of varying experience
levels. By refining visuals, simplifying instructions, and enhancing part identification, the manual
can achieve higher usability standards. Future iterations should incorporate user feedback and
undergo iterative testing to ensure optimal performance and satisfaction.

Section 1: Build the Landing Gear
1. Insert one Small Yellow Rod (B) into each side of the 3-Way Red Connector (A).
2. Attach a Small Black Foot (F) to the end of each Yellow Rod (B).
3. Ensure both feet are aligned and stable.
Section 2: Construct the Body
4. Insert the Long Blue Rod (C) vertically into the top of the 3-Way Red Connector (A).
5. Push the Black Axle Pin (E) into the top of the Blue Rod (C).
Section 3: Assemble the Rotor
6. Attach one Propeller Blade (D) to each side of the Black Axle Pin (E).
7. Adjust the blades so they are evenly spaced and can spin freely.
